Should you declare you have weapons aboard or just have a good stash
spot for overseas cruising?

Again with the stupid questions. Any time some Rube asks what's the *best*
anything it indicates to me they are too stupid to understand that there is
no such thing as *best* for every situation.

There can only be a best for specific situations. For example, if you wished
to ward off a small pirate vessel that was approaching you a 50 caliper
sniper rifle would be the best by virtue of the fact that you could hit them
before they could likely get in range to hit you unless they were similarly
armed or had a 50 caliber machine gun mounted on deck. An Exocet missile
would be your only hope in that case.

And, if you are in a close quarters situation a 12 gauge shotgun would
probably be best to repel boarders. But watch the stays and shrouds! And a
pistol would be best to keep near your berth to blow away boarders who
happened to have gotten into your accommodation.

So, as you can see, you must first evaluate your cruising grounds and then
ship the appropriate weapon(s) for those situation most likely to eventuate.
Myself, I ship a fully automatic Kalishnakov and long banana magazines, a 12
gauge, double barreled, sawed off but legal length shotgun, a 357 magnum
revolver with alternate snake shot and jacketed hollowpoint rounds, and a 50
caliper sniper rifle with night scope and range finder/computer for windage
and autoheight for distance (windage) calibration. Given a steady platform I
can blow an enemy's head off his shoulders at 1/2 mile distance.

You've got to decide if you're a man first, though, before you ship the
first gun. If you don't view a firearm as deadly force and deadly force only
but as some "deterrent" (like a weenie liberal) then you'd best remain
unarmed.

If you decide to carry weapons do declare them but do have one pistol well
hidden that you don't declare. But if you should have reason to use that
hidden gun make sure you are in a place where you can get rid of any bodies.
You don't want the authorities to know you were holding out on them. If they
find out you were you can kiss your declared arsenal goodbye (and probably
your freedom as well) as most countries require you to turn weapons over to
the authorities for impoundment until you're ready to depart their port or
country.
