Extended crusing means the sensible mariner will want to tap into weather nets, cruiser nets and the like -- all kinds of frequencies which may not be known in advance for which crystals are unavailable. Advice: Get a modern SSB and be done with it. If money's the issue, work a few weeks longer. Although I agree with all other arguments, I think that a 25 year old radio with it's discrete components is easier to repair than a modern one, stuffed with microchips and fine-pitch surface mount components.
