Default Lombardini marine diesel engines

I'm interested in the Lombardini 57HP 2204M diesel for a wide beam
canal boat.

This appears a small light high performance engine, reving out to
3600rpm at a good price for the power. This 2.2L engine revs 800rpm
more than the similar size BETA 50HP - and has more usable torque up
to 120 NM

I would put a 3:1 reduction and a 20" Crowther prop, the idea being to
have a large efficient prop turning slowly with the engine running in
the most fuel efficient range. But plenty of instant stopping power at
1200 shaft rpm when you need it.

Lombardini have just been taken over by Kohler of the USA. So how this
might change things in the UK for distribution/service remains to be
seen

Would be very interested to have comments on Lombardini quality /after
sales service. And any servicing problems encountered .

Thanks in advance

If Kohler takes over Lambardini, there might be a chance for service. Right
now there isn't and your application requires a large displacement, low
speed engine for a multitude of reasons. Engine wear is a product of engine
speed. A low speed engine will last 50 years. A high speed engine will last
maybe 5 to 10 years. Fuel efficiency for a high speed engine is typically
..42 lbs per hp hour. Where a Gardner or equivelent will deliver .36 to .38
lbs per hp hour. The low speed motors are 100 % duty cycle rated engines.
The high speed engines are limited duty cycle motors. Don't compare apples
with oranges.
