I sail with an Englishman who is not a US citizen, but lives here on a
visa. His boat is US registered, but he told me he couldn't own it,
because he is an alien. (I always did notice the pointy ears, but didn't
say anything...(c His boat is "owned" by his son, a natural-born
American born in Atlanta. Your post made me very curious. Maybe
Geoffrey has the wrong information.

I'm not a citizen but am a permanent resident. I bought the boat and
it's in my name. I even have a SSN and a job!

The only reason to register outside US is because I want to go to Cuba
to see my son, wife and g/kids in the late spring, and don't want to be
hassled by DHS on my return. My (US) wife is also getting a UK passport.

BVI seems like a good idea, but what about staying in Louisiana on
return? Can I stay for as long as I want here on BVI registration?

This seems like it's more trouble than it's worth.

I screwed up in 1979 when I was in Tehran and the Shah was about to be
deposed. The British Embassy offered to get us British passports to
deflect Iranian radicals who hate Americans, a sort of diversion.

I wish I had taken them up on the offer. They even said it was renewable.

Hindsight is 20/20.....nuts.

Another offer came from the Canadians, too.
