Should it ever occur...

that I am able to set-off on my circumnavigation, let it be known by all
that I am fully aware of the inherent dangers of such a voyage and have
chosen to set sail with those dangers in mind. And should the Sea claim me
during that voyage, I have one and only one thing to say to armchair
skippers casting aspersions upon my good name and character:

Bite me. My boat, my life, my decision.

Bravo, well said.

Some of us here, like me, would enjoy knowing more about your boat and
plans.

Oh, no real plans. Just putting it into the record. lol

My boat is a Rawson 30 ketch, built in 1963, called "Escapade." I'm her
second owner, original owner having died a few months before I bought her
from the OCC Sailing School in Newport Beach CA about 6 years ago. Moved
from Long Beach CA to the Green Bay WI area in 2003, now I sail Green Bay
and Lake Michigan, with an eye toward getting back into the salt some day.
Green Bay (the bay itself) develops exceptionally nasty short-period waves
with little provocation, which can make for some very hairy sailing
experiences. Even 15 knots can be challenging if it's blowing from the
northeast for very long. I do miss the Pacific rollers. Here it's all waves,
no swells.

But I've got lots of sailing destinations within easy reach -- islands,
coves and bays, nice protected anchorages and access to great cruising
grounds if I have the time to visit them. Planning to take a week in July
for a nice long sail up to Beaver Island, down the eastern shore of Lake
Michigan, then back to Marinette via the Sturgeon Bay canal.

I hope the guy who is nearby when you sink hasn't read this email posting.

Can you just see it; you are sinking, and just before the boat goes down
you get off a radio message to a sailboat nearby.

"mayday ,, I am just off your bow".

"Oh, is that you Karin"?

"Yes, yes, come and get me, I am about to go into the water".

"Have a nice swim; Bite me. My boat, my life, my decision"

Gurgle.. gurgle..

That's all well and good until other people are called upon to put
their life on the line for a rescue.

Thus my aversion to carrying an Epirb.

How about this: Until I am in such a condition and people ARE looking for
me, the point is moot.

It's a stupid, selfish, and irresponsible thing to do for the reason I
mentioned.

CWM

And I consider it far more stupid, selfish and irresponsible to expect
others to put their own lives at risk to come to one's rescue when one has
made the decision to put one's life in danger. Particularly if that "one" is
me. So I'll make a deal with you: I insist that you do NOT come to my
rescue. End of problem.

The problem is that you don't get to make this decision. They will be
coming to look for you, Epirb or not. Your wrong-headed plan only
serves to put others at greater risk.

CWM

I've already told them not to. If they do anyway, it's not my plan that put
them at risk, but their own. Please excuse me for being responsible for
myself.
