I have a chance to salvage and sell a Perkins 4-108 from a fishing boat that
is going to be scuttled or scrapped. The original owner of this boat died
and ownership changed hands. Therefore I can't obtain any history on the
engine.

This engine will still turn over but since the fuel has been removed, I
can't start it to see how it runs.. It was running fine when the boat was
abandon at the marina 6 years ago. (I emptied the fuel tanks 6 months ago
and the fuel had been treated and was still ing good condition) The engine
looks like it had been well maintained.

The only thing that it will cost me, is my labor..

If I ultimately am able to start and run this engine, how much would it go
for (complete with, electrical, coolers and reverse gear)?? Say on eBay or
rec.boat.marketplace ??

I know this model has been around for many years. What kind of reputation
does it have among rec. boaters??

If they run they are worth a few bucks--if not a few bucks less---However, they
are worth a tad more than the 4-107----clean the starter, get new fuel, strong
battery , bottle of Jim Beam (large), ,can of wd-40, electric fuel pump. Take a
swig of the JB (two fingers worth, index and little)flip on the electric pump
and while the engine is turning squirt a tad of wd 40. If it doesn.t start, take
another swig, repeat the wd 40,Just keep swigging,wd40ing and it will start.
don't use either and don't do the wd40 unless it is turning---If that does not
get it started, try S56 and Jack Daniels--This procedure has always worked for
me---

With 2 fingers of JB, starting the diesel has become secondary in
importance.

3600 planes with transponders are burning 8-10 million
gallons of kerosene per hour over the USA. R-12 car air
conditioners are responsible for the ozone hole, right?

After the fifth try you have forgotten you are on a boat.
