Default Perkins 4-108, How good?

The one we inherited with Lionheart, an Amel Sharki ketch, has about
7000 hours on it and runs just great after the shop cleaned the scale
out of the heat exchanger. One of the guys I met on here in NC sold
us his old 4-108, complete with transmission, all controls, manuals,
etc. for $1200 cash, a great bargain. It's in the shop being
evaluated now at General Diesel in Charleston. They said at 800 hours
it was in fine condition, though the starter looks a little rough.

Even at 7000 hours, this nice Perkins 4-108 cranks right up in seconds
and gives the ketch plenty of power to freeze the coldplate, power the
boat and run two big alternators to charge the batteries. Amazing
machines.....don't hesitate.

And they are SIMPLE, which is also very nice.

PS - Don't forget to hook up the STOP solenoid or she'll just go on
running and running and running....(c;

I have a chance to salvage and sell a Perkins 4-108 from a fishing boat that
is going to be scuttled or scrapped. The original owner of this boat died
and ownership changed hands. Therefore I can't obtain any history on the
engine.

This engine will still turn over but since the fuel has been removed, I
can't start it to see how it runs.. It was running fine when the boat was
abandon at the marina 6 years ago. (I emptied the fuel tanks 6 months ago
and the fuel had been treated and was still ing good condition) The engine
looks like it had been well maintained.

The only thing that it will cost me, is my labor..

If I ultimately am able to start and run this engine, how much would it go
for (complete with, electrical, coolers and reverse gear)?? Say on eBay or
rec.boat.marketplace ??

I know this model has been around for many years. What kind of reputation
does it have among rec. boaters??

3600 planes with transponders are burning 8-10 million
gallons of kerosene per hour over the USA. R-12 car air
conditioners are responsible for the ozone hole, right?
