Just a thought ... why did the Pirates wear those "pirate" hats? Was that
just a popular hat of the time?

Always wondered about that one.

Black Beard with a Red Sox hat would be a little weird though.

I don't wear baseball caps except a CSY logo one at boat shows or
similar venues to identify myself to other CSY owners. I feel that
in general baseball caps are pretty useless for the purpose of keeping
the sun off of a person, with the possible exception of the Cape Cod
type hats which have the EXTRA long bill - my dad used to wear those.

All the hats I wear have chin straps because otherwise I have to keep
grabbing them to keep them from blowing off. To date (knock wood),
I've never lost one overboard.

Bob wears bbcaps all the time, but mostly ashore or in the cockpit
which is enclosed. AFAIK he hasn't lost any overboard either. Being
of the male pattern baldness tribe, he has more need to cover the top
of his head than I do (yet anyway).

While viewing your photos I noticed you had one of the schooner
"Adix of London".

During July of last year... this same vessel was moored at Apia,
Independant Samoa... and I also photographed same. It definitely
is an eye catcher.

One particular morning the crew and I broke out our binoculars to
watch some nice looking gal exercising on a fancy treadmill that
had been placed on Adix's mid deck.

Needless to say... the "Adix of London" is well traveled..!

Musto caps don't blow off! The secret is in the strong crocodile clip and
leather lanyard. You just buy the wrong caps Roger.

stuff the overpriced musto rubbish, keep your big floppy canvas hat but
use some string to tie it around your chin (surely there must be some
string on your yacht?)/

Or maybe a hockey skate 'lace'. A string would probably cut into your chin.

Couldn't you just tie the string (or lace or bungee or whatever) to
the hat and the pin the other end to the back of your jacket or shirt?
That way the string wouldn't be around your neck, and you wouldn't
have to decide which chin to put it under.

I have so many things around my neck already - cameras (at least one
and sometimes two), and binoculars, and sometimes a separate detached
hood if it is cold that when a hat blows off, I get strangled.
