Baseball caps for sailing?
I like wearing baseball caps when not spending long periods in intense
sun (then, it's my big floppy canvas sailing hat, I always know which way to put it on because the mildew goes on the right) but the frequency with which they blow off is maddening. It makes for great MOB practice and I'm proud to say I've never left one behind. I also have a fair collection from boats I've designed, Titanic Expeditions, etc. My constant running and boat maneuvering to retrieve wayward caps has given me a bit of a complex. I can't recall ever in my life seeing someone else lose theirs. I've suspected for years that there might be something strange about the shape of my head and I suddenly realized that this photo from my recent cruise confirms it. http://home.maine.rr.com/rlma/06C23.htm What do you think? Do I need to retire my collection of caps? Was there never any hope of my being a professional ball player, aside from not being able to hit, catch, or run? If your hats blow off, please let me know, I'll feel much better. -- Roger Long |

My high class clients give out Musto's but I don't wear them sailing
because I'm afraid they'll blow off. Maybe I should give them a try. -- Cone head |

The fancier LT5 is my steppin' out hat. It has a 'tie system' that loups behind your head and under your chin. I haven't had mine blow off 'when using the double secure system' in the seven or so years I've owned the hat. If you do lose it, they'll supply a new one for half price. If you wear it out...a new one for free. http://www.tilley.com/ |

we turn around and pick up our lost caps, it is a form
of man overboard training, for our crew....... Dennis Pogson wrote: Roger Long wrote: My high class clients give out Musto's but I don't wear them sailing because I'm afraid they'll blow off. Usually, my caps are enough. I wear my Tilley only when there is no wind and too much sun or it is raining hard. The hat clips are usually on the same displays as Croakies and have a clip on each end. Harlan -- To respond, obviously drop the "nospan"? |

I just make them out of two acco-style binder clips and a piece of string (choose your favorite hitch). A few have still gone overboard -- with both clips still on the hat (no known solution for that). -- John Forkosh ( mailto: where j=john and f=forkosh ) |

I don't lose nearly as many hats as I used to when we were racing, but the solution that worked best at that time was to tie a loop of sail repair twine through the strap on the back of the hat. The other end of the twine had a loop secured to my sunglasses croakie/whatever. Never lost a hat (or sunglasses) with that setup. |
