Hi,
Anyone spent time anchored out at Ft. Myers? Liveaboard friendly? Nice place? Never been there, and looking for a place to live aboard and work over the winter, Any other suggestions - Looking for a place where there are no anchoring restrictions/limits, the downtown area is easy to access by dinghy/bike. Thanks, Mike. |

There are significant numbers of liveaboards in the Ft Myers area, mostly in marinas, but a few that are anchored out, mostly on the North Ft Myers side of the river. I would describe downtown Ft Myers as "interesting", some parts nice, some less so. There is a lot of restoration and gentrification going on in the old downtown area, as well as a lot of modern redevelopment with high rise condos, hotels, etc. There are lots of nearby restaurants, supplys and services available, along with a few good waterfront pubs. All are within easy walking distance. If your boat draws 5 feet or less there are lots of options. |

They are across the river from each other, and North Ft Myers on the north side of the river, seems to have a more relaxed attitude based on what I've observed. There is a very popular anchorage north of Lofton Island where some people seem to stay a loooooong time although I do no know what, if any, regulations apply. Cape Coral on the other hand has a 14 day anchor limit which seems to be fairly strictly enforced. The secret of course is to not over stay your welcome in any one place. That way you're a cruiser. :-) Ft Myers Beach, which is yet again another political entity, has adopted some fairly strict regulations, and replaced the old floating trailer park behind Estero Island with a highly regulated mooring field. Most of the old timers seem to have moved back into Hurricane Bay behind San Carlos Island. |
