Hi,

I just bought a Catalina 22 swing keel. There are no moorings left,
but I can dry sail it out of the local club. They have a two ton
electric winch which should be more than enough.

Many class boats drysail out of the club, but the all are open cockpit
with lifting rings. inside.

Would it be practical to lauch the Catalina 22 swing keel off the
trailer using a canvas bridal that goes around the hull?

I guess I should be more specific.

I was worried about getting the straps down under the keel and not
wacking the mast.

Is there something I should know about the whole procedure before I
give it a try???

The only place I have experience with the slings they have a large metal
frame holding the straps apart side-to-side and fore-aft. At our club
where we launch a lot of dinghys the hoists have large hooks. Each boat
has it's own lifting bridle arrangement that stays with that boat. The
bridle is usually two lines to the shroud chainplates and one line to the
transom. All these lines are connected to a large ring that the hook on
the hoist grabs onto. Is that how your club is or do they already have
some kind of strap arrangement? Kirk.

Welllll...... with a swing keel, you should know that it's really
simple to trailer launch and retrieve a Catalina 22 if you have a
decent ramp. Especially if you have an extendable trailer tongue. I'd
venture to say it'd be quicker, simpler, and safer to do it that way.
I can see all sorts of unnecessary problems with the "strap under the
hull" hoist method.

Rick ------- launched a C22 MANY times.

Why can't you launch from a ramp?
Or if you must sling, you could possibly set the slings slightly off
center to set the mast angle outwards.

The club where I can keep the boat on a trailer does not have a ramp.
The boat ramp does not have a place I can keep the mast up. Getting
it in and out of my yard is tough.

I really would like to keep it at the club and lauch it with our 2 ton
winch. Do you know how / if this can be done?

A 2 ton lift would be a bit on the light side for a Catalina
22. Not much safety margin. And you'd be much better off
setting up lifting rings on the boat itself than to put
slings under it. With slings, you need a big spreader fram
to hold the upper ends of the slings in place.

One good thing about using a hoist is that you don't get
your trailer all rusty.
