Default Space from US to Hawaii?

Hola all,

Apologies if this is a frequently asked question on the NG.

I'm planning to do travel to Hawaii (from the UK) sometime later this
year (probably the summer), yet I want to travel sustainably, i.e. no
planes.

I figured it'll be fairly straightforward to get to the US by boat, and
then travel accross to the West coast. Am thus trying to find a way to
go from the US mainland to Hawaii... by boat.

When I posted on soc.culture.hawaii someone suggested asking here about
the possibility of someone needing a crew hand or having a space on
their boat. The immediate draw back of me is that I've got little
sailing experience.

What do you think my chances are? Will hanging around marinas trying to
hitch a proverbial lift work?

My original post to soc.culture.hawaii:

I'm hoping to travel (sustainably) to Hawaii sometime this year to work

for a few months on an organic farm of some kind...

Anyone got any ideas for getting from the mainland US to Hawaii
sustainably and cheaply?

I've had a few thoughts: Get a job on some kind of cruise ship, private

ship. Find a nice person with a private ship to ferry me. Swim. Etc.

It's looking like its going to be tricky, but flying there by plane
kind of defeats the object of good quality slow-time and sustainable
travel.

Many thanks if anyone can help,

Jack

I have no idea where you are located. Some suggestions:

Look in Latitude 38, www.latitude38.com

If in Southern California, go to Minnies, in Newport Beach, and visit
all the usual suspected spots in San Diego.

If In Northern California, San Francisco has it's spots popular with
cruisers.

Deliveries are always easy to get on. Be careful of cruisers. Use the
smell test. Always avoid dreamers and others who not going to actually
leave the dock.

Yes, you need a road trip to the water.

Good luck.

I think there is plenty of skippers with lots of experience and lack of
money, so if you got money.....

I think there are two options: 1: a US skipper from the bay area taking a
"short" trip or 2: one of you fellow englishmen going round the world.

In the last case that'll be through the Panama canal in the early spring
(after they have followed the trade winds from Palmas and before the
hurricane season)

In case of option 2 contact one of your "local" ocean crusing organisations
(I can think of: http://www.oceancruisingclub.org) and ask them. - and bear
in mind that travveling in this way takes a lot of time. And time equal
money.

See if you can get someone living near a West Marine to post your request on
their bulletin boards.

Go to the Vic-Maui Race website and register. Try the TRANSPAC as well.
Some of those guys will need rail meat.
