Urgent ! Should I buy this Beneteau 473 ?

I've just put down a refundable deposit on this 2005
Beneteau 473 so please let me know if you think this
is a good buy.

This boat is quite well-equipped and is almost like new
and I can buy her for just under $300,000. The previous
owner only took one short trip and decided to trade her in
for a larger boat. According to a recent survey this boat is
worth $310,000 and has a replacement value of $380,000.

I've put the specs and pictures on my new web site at

http://beneteau473.tripod.com

This boat may not be as good as a Tayana or a Catalina
for crossing an ocean but at this point I don't even know
if I'll ever have a chance to do this because my cats may
get seasick. For sailing around here (California) or even
going to the East Coast or the Bahamas I'm sure she will
do just fine.

One small problem is that there isn't a good place to put
a combo washer and dryer.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Seems like you are proposing to pay too close to the survey.
Wouldn't paying $262,000 feel better to you?
[There are plenty more if the seller won't move....]

It's a great looking boat but Yachtworld has several with an average
price of about 269k. If the one you are looking at is Joie de Vivre, it
is the most expensive! I think that I'd look at the others before
committing. Although it is a 2005, it's not new. Let someone else take
the hit. Of course if money doesn't matter.......it's a fine boat for
your cats.

You can actually see the name Joie de Vivre in some of the pictures
on my web site :-) I first saw this boat at yachtworld.com. At that time
somebody else had an offer pending but it just fell through last week.

The other Beneteau 473's in the U.S. that are listed for less are all
older (and mostly on the East Coast) and I wouldn't mind paying
10-11% more to get a 2005 model instead of 2002.

2005 $320,000 Warwick, RI

2004 $294,000 Palm Beach, FL
2004 $249,900 Mt. Clemens, MI

2003 $285,000 Newport, RI
2003 $255,000 Cape Cod, MA
2003 $254,500 Cataumet, MA

2002 $289,000 Pt Richmond, CA
2002 $269,000 Racine, WI (sale pending)
2002 $269,000 Huntington, NY
2002 $265,000 Punta Gorda, FL
2002 $265,000 San Diego, CA (2-cabin version)
2002 $249,900 Deltaville, VA

2000 $269,000 Milwaukee, WI

But now the Tayana dealer is working on a deal for me for
a new Tayana Vancouver 460 Pilot which will also include
a live-aboard slip. I may even go for this one even if it costs
$100,000 more and comes with less equipments because you
normally have to wait a couple of years to get a live-aboard
slip here in San Diego.

As mentioned earlier I also have pictures of this Tayana
on the web at http://tayana46.tripod.com

The Beneteau dealer says that this Tayana is heavy and slow
(and top heavy) but I think the consensus here is that Tayana
is a better bluewater boat than Beneteau.

Thanks again for all the suggestions. I'll let you know if
I actually decide to buy something next week.

I'm not a sail person but the principle of asking for permission to by
a boat seems quite odd to me. Personally, I would have done much
research and then asked the group for confirmation or denigration of
what I decided.

I plan on doing this for a power boat in the future. I will have lots
of homework done before making a posting.

Either way, good sailing!

Poopie:

Silly boy. Put the combo washer and dryer on the foredeck! That way the
noise won't bother you as much at night. And, be sure to balance them
athwart-ships so Olive Oil will not find the dryer out of balance while
under way!

I think you should offer the broker a couple extra thousand to secure the
deal. You don't want this baby getting away from you. It will look real nice
on that private dock down in the South Pacific.

And lastly, did you finally decide against the tennis court?

Cheers,

Whimpie

Thanks Gary. I didn't have a lot of time to do a research
because somebody else's offer just fell through last week.
There are also other people who are interested in this boat
and I don't see another Beneteau 473 with 3 cabins on the
market which is almost new and located on the West Coast.

She wants a washer/dryer combo on board
so I may have to go with the Tayana :-)
