Urgent ! Should I buy this Beneteau 473 ?
I've just put down a refundable deposit on this 2005 Beneteau 473 so please let me know if you think this is a good buy. This boat is quite well-equipped and is almost like new and I can buy her for just under $300,000. The previous owner only took one short trip and decided to trade her in for a larger boat. According to a recent survey this boat is worth $310,000 and has a replacement value of $380,000. I've put the specs and pictures on my new web site at http://beneteau473.tripod.com This boat may not be as good as a Tayana or a Catalina for crossing an ocean but at this point I don't even know if I'll ever have a chance to do this because my cats may get seasick. For sailing around here (California) or even going to the East Coast or the Bahamas I'm sure she will do just fine. One small problem is that there isn't a good place to put a combo washer and dryer. Thanks in advance for your suggestions. |

Thanks in advance for your suggestions. It's a great looking boat but Yachtworld has several with an average price of about 269k. If the one you are looking at is Joie de Vivre, it is the most expensive! I think that I'd look at the others before committing. Although it is a 2005, it's not new. Let someone else take the hit. Of course if money doesn't matter.......it's a fine boat for your cats. |

You can actually see the name Joie de Vivre in some of the pictures on my web site :-) I first saw this boat at yachtworld.com. At that time somebody else had an offer pending but it just fell through last week. The other Beneteau 473's in the U.S. that are listed for less are all older (and mostly on the East Coast) and I wouldn't mind paying 10-11% more to get a 2005 model instead of 2002. 2005 $320,000 Warwick, RI 2004 $294,000 Palm Beach, FL 2004 $249,900 Mt. Clemens, MI 2003 $285,000 Newport, RI 2003 $255,000 Cape Cod, MA 2003 $254,500 Cataumet, MA 2002 $289,000 Pt Richmond, CA 2002 $269,000 Racine, WI (sale pending) 2002 $269,000 Huntington, NY 2002 $265,000 Punta Gorda, FL 2002 $265,000 San Diego, CA (2-cabin version) 2002 $249,900 Deltaville, VA 2000 $269,000 Milwaukee, WI But now the Tayana dealer is working on a deal for me for a new Tayana Vancouver 460 Pilot which will also include a live-aboard slip. I may even go for this one even if it costs $100,000 more and comes with less equipments because you normally have to wait a couple of years to get a live-aboard slip here in San Diego. As mentioned earlier I also have pictures of this Tayana on the web at http://tayana46.tripod.com The Beneteau dealer says that this Tayana is heavy and slow (and top heavy) but I think the consensus here is that Tayana is a better bluewater boat than Beneteau. Thanks again for all the suggestions. I'll let you know if I actually decide to buy something next week. |

Personally, I would have done much research and then asked the group for confirmation or denigration of what I decided. I plan on doing this for a power boat in the future. I will have lots of homework done before making a posting. Either way, good sailing! Gary Gaugler, Ph.D. Microtechnics, Inc. Granite Bay, CA 95746 916.791.8191 gary@microtechnics dot com |

Poopie:
Silly boy. Put the combo washer and dryer on the foredeck! That way the noise won't bother you as much at night. And, be sure to balance them athwart-ships so Olive Oil will not find the dryer out of balance while under way! I think you should offer the broker a couple extra thousand to secure the deal. You don't want this baby getting away from you. It will look real nice on that private dock down in the South Pacific. And lastly, did you finally decide against the tennis court? I didn't have a lot of time to do a research because somebody else's offer just fell through last week. There are also other people who are interested in this boat and I don't see another Beneteau 473 with 3 cabins on the market which is almost new and located on the West Coast. |

E of the Koh Lanta are a dozen or so smaller islands (Koh Po, Koh Kam Yai, Koh Talabeng, Koh Klang, etc). Second, the Koh Lanta twins might be better regarded as being in the Andaman Sea. So your sentence might be better formed as: The Lanta islands are in the Andaman Sea. Please tell your grade school geography teacher that Andaman Sea is a part of the Indian Ocean (not Pacific Ocean). See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andaman_Sea And tell your grade school English teacher that most people use the term "Lanta Island" possibly because Lanta Yai and Lanta Noi islands are so close to each other that they look just like one island with a river or canal running through. See http://www.koh-lanta-thailand.com/info/maplanta.htm If you do a Google search for "Lanta Island" you'll get about 100,400 results whereas a search for "Lanta Islands" only gives about 656 results. |

Please tell your grade school geography teacher that Andaman Sea is a part of the Indian Ocean (not Pacific Ocean). See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andaman_Sea My grade school geography teacher would never have argued that the Andaman Sea was part of the Pacific! I think she would have grudgingly accepted the notion that the Andaman S was a part of the Indian O, but she would have argued further that the basin of the Andaman Sea is geologically distinct from that of the Indian Ocean and much more so than, say, the Bay of Bengal (which she accepted as a part of the Indian O). I suspect that she was right, hence the demarcation of the Andaman Sea made by oceanographers and cartographers. She (Ms Pilkington) likewise argued that only unthinking fools regarded Europe and Asia as separate continents - she said Asia and Europe had been joined together as Eurasia longer than the Indian subcontinent had been joined to Asia. Ms P would not have regarded wikipedia as an authority. Why should you? And tell your grade school English teacher that most people use the term "Lanta Island" possibly because Lanta Yai and Lanta Noi islands are so close to each other that they look just like one island with a river or canal running through. See http://www.koh-lanta-thailand.com/info/maplanta.htm If you do a Google search for "Lanta Island" you'll get about 100,400 results whereas a search for "Lanta Islands" only gives about 656 results. And my grade school English teacher (Ms Soper) would have likely retorted that a mistake made by the majority (especially when the 'most people' to which you refer is just a majority of webpage authors (largely writing in English, I assume) about islands in Thailand) is not reason for doing likewise. After all, how do the people of Thailand refer to Koh Lanta Yai and K Lanta Noi? And Ms P would have chimed in that 10,000 years ago, the Ko Lanta twins were not islands but just another part of the Eurasian mainland, because the sea level was quite low then. And about five thousand years ago, the sea level in that area was a couple of metres higher than at present, so only Koh Lanta Yai and K Lanta Noi would have been 'further apart', to use your concept. |

It sounds like you actually know what you are talking about and have actualy been there. Did you go in a Big Mac 26, sailing canoe, Benny Toe or a You Know? I was thinking of going in a jet ski or love boat but don't know how many days it would take, whether or not it should have a PVC bimini frame, and was worried about what the neighbors might think. Do you know where I can get free charts? I had several good charts of that area on restaurant placemats but they were lost in a Gail (I think she took them). |

No.. don't buy it. Not if you cant get your washer dryer onboard. And what
about the dishwasher? you forgot that didn't you. This may prove a better alternative. You may have to spend a few pennies more, but it will have a few more creature comforts. http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ship/cv-63-kh-hi.jpg DP wrote in message k.net... Looked at 473 closely this summer (before deciding to buy a catamaran after all) - liked them, heard good things about them, most common boat on the ARC, world's biggest manufacturer, lots built, good reviews, as easily resold as any boat, discount on new price.... what is there not to like, and the spec looks OK too. The pics show the version without the extra cupboards at the forward port end of the saloon, but hey, more room for guests with bubbly when you aren't sailing. |
