Default Xmas gift ideas for boaters?

My husband and I recently purchased our first boat - a 24' Maxum
cruiser - and now we're boat crazy. I'd love to get him something
boat-related as a Xmas gift, but since we're so new to boating, I have
no clue what to get! Any ideas?

You don't tell us what he or the boat has, his experience level or your
location.

The list is endless.

If he doesn't have a chart plotting GPS, it sure makes cruising a dream.

If he doesn't have a knife that can cut through fouled props quickly, he
should.

if he doesn't have Maui Jim Titanium sunglasses he isn't cool.

If he doesn't have great foul weather gear for the climate in which you
cruise, he be all wet.

If you have a cheap, ineffective, come with the boat anchor and rode, I
hope you don't plan to trust your life some night to it.

If he hasn't passed the Power Squadron course your life might be in
danger so signing him up may be the best present for the two of you.

The more you share, the many more knowledgable folks in this NG can help.

A 2006 fishing license!

A gift certificate to your local boat supply store (e.g., West Marine).

Cruising Guides and Charts for your location and dream location.

Sunscreen.

And everything else already suggested by others.

Where will you be boating?

I say buy both of you the autoinflatable life jackets. Then wear them,
they are the mark of REAL sailors (at least if you tell yourself that
you are more likely to wear them all the time).
Another nice item: A personal EPIRB to attach to those life jackets.
Then, personal strobes to attach to those life jackets.
Parachute flares.

How about some of the classic must reading such as Chapman's.
gps-or GPS chatplotters
digny
charts
cruise books
boating magizines
once you have been bitten-too late, you will want it all

or a really good first aid kit
you will be surprised how feeling safe makes boating even more fun!

One of the most appreciated gifts I ever gave the owner/captain I sail a
lot with is the Weems & Plath gimball-mounted yacht lamp that is the
Model 700 on this webpage:
http://www.cgedwards.com/Weems/lamps.html
I think I bought it for $79 and the brass gimbal mount was another $30
from West Marine.

It's proudly mounted just to starboard of the forward main cabin hatch
where it casts a beautiful glow across any party aboard "Lionheart".
It's safe, explosion-proof, the burner unscrews out the bottom of the
lamp without unmounting it from the bulkhead for easy filling and burns
cleanly a long time between fillups. It's warm glow is appreciated by
everyone who sees it. It brings back thoughts of yesterday in a modern
yacht full of electronics.

It was probably the finest gift I ever bought for anyone....damned near
perfect....(c;

If you and your husband haven't taken it yet, let me suggest signing up
as a couple for the local US Power Squadron course.

Put a bottle of your favorite libation on ice to celebrate when you paas
the course.

It really is a lot of fun as well as teaching some prteey good boating
safety basics.

(You have any idea how difficult it is for a rag bagger like me to admit
a bunch of stink boaters have a great program?grin)
