Default Calling a spade a Spade (was about chain)

I'm in web hell, dialup neighborhood, so posting through google, and
unable to respond (quirk of the system) to Glenn's post on the subject
but since I'm changing the subject anyway, here I am outside that
thread :{))

Glenn, you have me drooling - but with any luck, we'll be out at sea by
that time.

What's the likelihood of larger ones - our boat is 35k# - later?

Thanks, and have a good time in the BVI!

In my opinion: spades a great anchor but its heavily hyped, the company
knows how to promote and push push push it into the hands of the
magazines and boating stores.
its fun when a new product comes out, remember slick 50? everyone
wants it. well spade has issues in alot of bottom conditions, think
hard before you buy all the hype.
ever wonder why they came out with the oceane? it was built to a cost
line for mass markieting. its a sucky anchor in my opinion.

Have you actually tried a Spade anchor yourself? I'm swinging a 60,000
lb trawler on one right now as we speak, in 20 kt winds and marginal
bottom conditions. Had one on my old boat and liked it so well that I
bought another one for the GB49.

No one anchor is perfect for all conditions but the Spade is the best
overall that I've ever used, and I've tried just about all of them at
one time or another.

Just a satisfied (repeat) customer.

I have one and have found it no better than my Bruce or CQR. Works
poorly in grass over sand which is what I bought it for (Bahamas). Neither
the manufacturer nor distributor have offered any advice, help or made
any attempt to resolve the problem.

Heavy grass is tough stuff to anchor in. Have you talked to Glenn A?

Grass wasn't especially heavy.

Doug, forgot to ask some of the key questions:

What is the weight of your boat vs anchor weight?

What scope ratio were you using and length/type of chain?

Boat is 15 Tons (43 feet). Anchor is 33#. Rated for a 53' to 65' boat.

100' all chain in 10 feet of water. Anchor just laid on its side and
dragged.
45# CQR set just fine after giving up on the Spade.
