Dad just bought a small yacht, 32ft express cruiser, he says it was the
end of summer steal. It needs what we all refer to as TLC, to stay
positive. Mom passed last Spring and it has just has been difficult for
all of us. We are all experiencing a real void and although adjusting
we're filling it with some strange behavior. Like I re-decorated 2
perfectly nice rooms in my house -just because- and dad bought a car and
fixed it up for my younger sister now has this small yacht.

We'll he's great about the carpentry and handyman tasks but needs help
in the cleanup. So I finally figured out what to get him for his
birthday next month. Its one of those Roomba Robot Vacuums. We were
watching the tube and he saw the commercial and thought it was the next
best thing since sliced bread.

I told him to get a cleaning women to come in.. god knows I can't help
my motto is Housekeeping won't kill you but why take the chance.

So should I get him his Discovery Robot? Anyone have one and like it?
the way I look at it is he can use it in the house, in the cabin of the
boat and if he buys an RV next year he's covered there too.

We were looking at those.. only problem is there's no actual suction. It's
basically a sweeper. If that's what you're looking for then fine, but it's
not a 'vacuum' per se.

Not onlyl that. A test on our local TV station showed that it took forever
to cover a room.
Now, if you could program it to chase a cat, that would be something to
watch.

Here is a thought,,,,so it is small,flat, and round, now let that little
bugger loose in a room at night, or better yet, your coming down the stairs
at night and there are no lights on,,,,hmm,,,you just happen to step on the
thing when it's passing buy, and all of a sudden whoop's there it is!!!
I can see the lawsuits a' comin.

I've had a very good experience with my Roomba. It's definitely a
vacuum, not a sweeper. It even uses sound to detect if an area is clean
or not. It listens to the number of particles hitting it as it sucks.
When the noises get far enough apart, it moves on. I thought that was
pretty cool technology. I really believe my floors are a lot cleaner. It
does take awhile to do a room, but that means I'm not doing it so I'm
happy.

If he's as old as I think he is, he'd be better off getting as a
present a small 2 gallon ShopVac/Craftsman wet-dry vaccuum, as the
capacity is great, they work in a boat where frequently wet and dry
are in the same place, they suck AND blow and they fit in a locker
relatively easily.

Not to mention they aren't delicate devices and Dad could use the
exercise.

I use a large ShopVac for home and a small one on the boat for
everything from sucking up what the bilge pump misses to cleaning out
the anchor locker and blowing the waterlift dry (I'm in Toronto).

I also have a high-powered, rechargable wet/dry hand vacuum of the
Dust Buster type on the boat. The small size is good for upholstery
and for getting into tiny, dusty spots.

The Rooma is a toy and will get stuck in 30 seconds on a 32 foot boat.
A whisk broom and a dustpan would make more sense.
