Hi all

I have been planning to build a steel kit boat (something along the
lines of a Bruce Roberts Spray 40) but I need the space! Where do you
look?

I live near Manhattan. The few places that do lease out
manufacturing/industrial property around here are either WAY too
expensive and offer only large lots (min 5000 sq feet, but I only need
1400 sq ft max) and require a LOT of paperwork.

At this point I am considering renting a lot on a farm or something
somewhere far inland - maybe even Mexico or Canada - and hope that I
can still somehow get a trailer and a crane to my site to cart it off
(this boat on a trailer will probably be taller than 15 feet - how
would it get through an underpass or bridge?) I'd be willing to rent
out my house and live in a trailer on the lot!

Any hints or suggestions?

Any former boatbuilders who can make me a decent offer?

Buy / rent a barn in PA, then haul it to Philly or Baltimore or Jersey
to splash. 15' high is not a big deal.

Have you priced steel lately?

You might want to consider this:

53" Roberts steel hull, never launched AND 165 hp perkins for less than
the price of the steel OR the Perkins- $6,000. The best part.... its in
New York!

Here's a hint, it's been on the market for over a year, you might get it
for free if you have a good story for the owner.

Look for space in the older (post) industrial cities along the Hudson. Call
a realestate agent in places like Newburg. Your looking for commerical
space find some one who deals in that and spend 10 minutes on the phone.
Doesn't take long and you might get lucky.

I am the manager of a ministorage facility and made a deal with the
owners on building it on the property. An indoor unit is being used
for building the three hulls (yes, trimaran) and then final assembly
will take place outside.

A forty foot by 12' beam boat though would have to be built all
outdoors here. I'm pretty far south (near Atlanta) so this isn't a
big problem but up north it might limit your building time in winter.

Checking with various boat movers will help you find out what can be
done as far as getting it to water when you are done.

There are some back water places in Virginia not too far from Norfolk where
you could work very cheaply.
We met a solo liveaboard guy who hauled out in some yard in a river and
fiberglassed his Tahiti ketch. He took his time, about a year. If you buy
locally, I don't think there are any sales taxes and you could live in a
little trailer nearby or in the yard. Ask on the newgroup for particular
referrals to small marinas or boat yards in that area.
