I was unsure about flying the Stars n Stripes on a short sail down the
Intra-Coastal 2 or three weeks ago. So my son hauled out the Chapman:
Piloting and Seamanship when we got home.

"It is never wrong for an American crew to fly the Stars n Stripes"
Though there is an alternative. And Chapman was not pleased that we
flew it high on the aft stay - but admits it happens....

Can't remember seeing Chapman mentioned on this group.
Amazon has it used (of course...) THE reference for sailboaters
and power boaters.

Chapman's is a worthy book to have, but for a more sailing oriented
reference, many prefer "The Annapolis Book of Seamanship", over
Chapman's.


Chapman's 2.5 inches thick, 8 X 11 wide n long, and heavy.
If Annapolis is lighter, that would be a positive benefit, right there!

I think it weighs about half as much.

Half the weight, half the knowledge, and half the value.

A weighty tome can always be used as kindling, lighter, half as much.

Free advice is always a good value if worth anything at all.
