Default first boat?

I Have found a 1988 Carver Montego
27' with a 10' beam and twin MerCruisers FWC.
Both out drives have also been rebuilt recently.
stringers appear nice and straight. I will have a survey done prior to
purchase.

Id like to ask the group what their feelings are regarding this boat in
general and as a first boat. The boat will be used exclusively on the
Chesapeake Bay In the Annapolis MD Area.

Please let me know if there is anything I should be careful of with this
year and model. Plus this boat has A/C which appearantley runs off batteries
is this a problem if you want to run the a/c at night while staying on the
boat?

Thanks

Paul

Its very unlikely that you can run the A/C on battery power all night. A very small A/C still draw
about 5 Amps AC, which will be about 60 Amps DC through an inverter. Ten hours of that is 600
Amp-hours. In practice you only want to use about 30% of your capacity (depleting to 50%, charging
to 80%), so this implies 1800 Amp-hours for a house bank. For comparison, a typical medium size
cruiser often has 400 to 600 Amp-hours, much of that is to cover fridge usage. There may be a tiny
A/C that's more feasible, but in general, those that want A/C run a generator continuously.

I don't know much about your choice in boats, but whatever you buy, make sure you already have a
place to put it!
