Registering a Home Built Boat
Once again, I'm looking to expand the FAQ I have on my website on
registering your home built boat. So far, I have information on the following states: AL, AZ, CA, FL, LA, PA, TN, TX and VA Anyone with experience in other states who would like to share, please respond here in rec.boats.building (so everyone can benefit) and let me know that I can quote you on my site. The FAQ is at http://www.messing-about.com/weekend...ister_faq.html I'm also looking for scantlings (dimensions) I can use for an article on home built oars. I have scantlings from Wooden Boat Magazine, but I'm hesitant to use them for fear of copyright violation (I should probably ask them ... they may not mind.) In any case, the article on oars is at http://www.messing-about.com/articles/oars.html - - - http://www.messing-about.com Resources for the Boat Builder, Renovator and Small Boat Skipper |

Registering a Home Built Boat
Hi,
Found a typo on the website, pertaining to California registration. I'm not trying to be a smart a**, but, form " BOAT 100 " is not for registering a new boat. Persons registering newly built boats in California need form " Boat 101 " downloadable from the DMV at http://www.dmv.ca.gov/forms/formsboat.htm Boat 100 is for " Historical Vessel Plaque ". Just my two cents...... John "Frank Hagan" fshagan_at_copper.net wrote in message ... Once again, I'm looking to expand the FAQ I have on my website on registering your home built boat. Thanks, John! I'll make the changes in the article, and include the
link. I had gone to the DMV a couple of times to get things straightened out, and got the form number wrong when I did the article. I appreciate the head's up. For NC, I was able to do it all by mail and telephone. I painless
process compared to what I've heard about other states. Frank Hagan wrote: Once again, I'm looking to expand the FAQ I have on my website on registering your home built boat. Thanks, Matt! NC does seem like a easy place to get it done. I'll
add the info to the FAQ. On Wed, 30 Jun 2004 10:30:20 GMT, Matt Langenfeld wrote: For NC, I was able to do it all by mail and telephone. Registering a Home Built Boat
In Georgia you fill out the standard registration form and write "Home
Built" in the HIN field. The state will assign a HIN with the registration. You also have to provide "invoices for materials". As my invoices fill an entier filing drawer I called for clarification. What they need is enough invoices to prove that it is new construction and not a rehab. On larger projects they actually come out to inspect and affix the HINs. Thanks for the update on GA, Glenn.
California does much the same thing, but they want to see that you paid sales tax on the materials. I brought in over 100 receipts, but had them taped to sheets of paper in descending value; the top three sheets of paper had 80% of the cost of the materials, so they just glanced at that and then signed off on it. Registering a Home Built Boat
I've registered homebuilt boats in 2 states, Louisiana and
Mississippi. Both are no sweat: Louisiana: You can download the application for registration, and a second form you will need for a homebuilt boat HIN appicaltion from the LADWF website: http://www.wlf.state.la.us/apps/netgear/page1.asp You will need to have the application for the HIN notarized by a notary that has a RAISED SEAL (a stamp won't do). You mail this along with fees to Baton Rouge. You call the nearest DWF office to arrange for a game warden will come to your house and inspect your boat. You'll need your receipts for all materials purchased that you used to built your boat. The inspection is not for the purpose to judge seaworthiness or safety, but just to make sure your boat is not stolen. Before the inspection you will get a temporary 30 permit in the mail, you can use it until you get your boat numbers. Mississippi: You can also download the boat registration application from the Mississippi Dept of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks: http://www.mdwfp.com/pdf/boatregapp.pdf Call their nearest office, and ask when you can bring the boat by for inspection. In South Mississippi, there's one officer that does all the inspections (a nice guy, too.) He'll be in your area maybe one day a week. Bring the boat by with all your receipts for materials used to build your boat, and he'll give you your HIN and then you send in the registration application to Jackson. You'll get your numbers in a week or so. The inspector will give you a 30 day permit until you get your numbers in, so you can use your boat right away. The inspection is not for the purpose to judge seaworthiness or safety, but just to make sure your boat is not stolen. Ed. Frank Hagan fshagan_at_copper.net wrote in message . .. Frank,
I plan to register my Nymph in Michigan in order to put a small motor on it. I will forward the Michigan requirements then. Greg. (Ed Askew) wrote in message . com...
