Default Looking for project Sailboat?

We have been asked to list a Morgan Out Islander 33 on our brokerage.
Problem is that the owner stripped boat interior and is only part way
through restoration so it is not suitable for listing. Perhaps someone in
this group is looking for a project? If so, we can put you in touch with the
owner.

The owner bought this boat with the idea of completely refitting for use as
a liveaboard. As a result, he removed much of the interior as well as the
engine, stove etc. He has done a lot of work, but there is still a lot to
do. Some items are listed below:

- paint interior of hull (owner has it prepared for painting)
- finish and paint interior woodwork plus re-install trim
- reinstall stove, plumbing, lighting, electrical panels etc.
- reinstall engine (owner would do this if need be)
- strip and repaint mast
- etc??

Much of the hardware to complete is available. The engine is on a test
stand and can be run.

This is without question a project boat. Depending on how well it is
finished, it could be worth say US$30-$40k (C$45-$60,000). The boat could
be put into condition to be sailed in a few months.

If there is anyone that is interested, there are some details at
www.windjammersails.com and we can email more pictures of the interior as it
is now.

I think he meant AFTER someone has spent $10-20k to restore it, not what
it's worth now.

Take a look at the asking price at the URL

Weeeeeeellll...what IS a pristine (whatever year) 33 Morgan OI worth???

My last boat was a "project" boat...I bought her for $25k, put another
$18 into her, and sold her for $48k. So if this one can be bought for
about the same price, restored for about the same amount, and be worth
at least as much as total amount invested in her, $30k asking doesn't
sound all that bad to me.

Y'all's thinking is exactly the opposite of what a bunch of old crocks
thought when I bought my boat. The seller was the estate of another
member. When the amount I paid for it got around, they all accused me of
stealing it--of taking food out of his widow's mouth....they all
insisted she was a "$40k yacht." But when I cornered a bunch of 'em at
the bar and said, "ok, gentlemen...you're all so sure it's worth
$40k...I'll sell her to any or all of you together for the same $25k I
paid for her, and YOU can sell it for $40k." No takers.

Now y'all are saying that this boat can't be bought and restored for
what she'll be worth when she's been restored...are you sure you know
any more about what this boat is worth than the old crocks at my YC knew
about the worth of my boat? )

Ron,
If you go back to the site, you will find that you are ALMOST correct in
that the asking price is indeed $30k. However, if you take the time to read
the details, you will also find that the currency is in CANADIAN Dollars and
also that the boat is located in CANADA. Both of these factors are somewhat
important.

Another search that would be useful, would be to look at say, Yachtworld
(www.yachtworld.com) - There are 8 M33 OI,s for sale with ASKING prices
ranging from US$21,500 to US$49,000 which equates to a range of about
C$30,000 to C$68,000. Furthermore, prices of US built boats located in
Canada tend to be higher than in the USA because they have to be shipped
here, duty paid etc. A fully restored M33 OI with a clean survey should
easily fetch C$55 - $60k up here.

If someone was able to buy the boat in question for say C$25k, spend about
$5-10k and put in a few hundred manhours, they would have a RESTORED boat
for less than one of the USED boats listed, which themselves may need work.

Anyone looking at actually doing such a project would see that this is not
such a bad deal.

Brian - We are talking about the Trailer AND the boat

- A HD trailer capable of handling an O33 IS worth about $4k and one is
included!

Lets be specific please. This is a 1974, almost thirty years old. I
forgot the trailer so add $2k. I'll up Brian's offer to $6,000.

Graham, What do you mean that Canadian is not worth as much. These
French Canadian guys that come down here tell me that Canadian is worth
more now. I've been giving them $1.10 American.
