Ok, an interesting boat thread..
No I haven't seen that type of construction, but, as a teenager, in the 60's, I saw a row boat that was very old, but looked like it was fiberglass. It was varnished burlap! it makes you think about how some techniques developed. If anyone is ever over in the UK, I'd recommend the Steamboat Museum, there are also a number of absolutely gorgeous clinker boats in there which although built to the then workboat standard are built to the kind of standards of workmanship most of us can only aspire to (I guess because after a lifetime building them you get good). Another boat which intrigued me was a K4 four man kayak. The hull shape was reminscent of a rowing four's hull. I know of one or two boats that may shortly be going for scrap, so I'm tempted to rip out the fittings and get it down to a bare hull and set it up for four paddlers for a laugh. We'd probably go swimming, but it'd be fun to try... Sadly I when I got there I realised my camera had gone west and so I didn't get any pics, I was going to do a brief report and send it to Chuck at Duckworks (since I can't afford a subscription ;-)) Al |
