The mast is hinged, it is all right there in the plans... assuming he
is working from a purchaced set of plans, they should be pretty
complete with the mast detail spelled out much better than we can do
here...

BTW, That's a hell of a job for a 12 year old. Lot's of parts and
lot's of woodwork. I hope he does not get bored before he is finished.
I remember the first time I opened the plans and looked at them with
the fellow I was going to help build it... I said, "so Danny, what do
you think"? He just shook his head and said, "lot's of parts, man,
that's a lot of parts..." I agreed. Good luck and send us some
pictures.

Build it according to the plans. Use it in the way advised, or what
seems sensible. Then it's likely to work as described.
Else you write notes to newsgroups etc., and the designer starts going
hungry. That's the way it works.
