My 12yo nephew is building a Weekender, described as a "23' gaff sloop
with a folding mast." His query: "How do you make the mast joint
strong enough so that when you hoist the sail you mast doesn't snap at

BTW, That's a hell of a job for a 12 year old. Lot's of parts and
lot's of woodwork. I hope he does not get bored before he is finished.
I remember the first time I opened the plans and looked at them with
the fellow I was going to help build it... I said, "so Danny, what do
you think"? He just shook his head and said, "lot's of parts, man,
that's a lot of parts..." I agreed. Good luck and send us some
pictures.
