Actually, out this way you don't find mooring buoys nor lines on the buoys.
This product is identical to the Happy Hooker, which I own and it works
great.

I think they're concerned, rightly so, that inexperienced people will snag
their props on the lines. I should have said that you don't find many
mooring buoys... we have a few, but none that I know of have lines on them.
You have to attach your own to the metal ring on the top of the buoy.

So please tell us what mystical incantation to use when we want to grab
a mooring that only has a ring, with no line, much less a pickup.

It turns out one of my favorite mooring areas has several public, first
come first serve moorings, but they have no line. As it turns out, I
have a similar gadget, designed to attach to a mop handle, but I always
forget to show my wife how to use it before we go to this island! I've
found its pretty easy to back up to the ball so my wife can feed a line
through while standing on the swim platform.

I've done that, but I've found that I can easily pick up the

This sort of gadget has been around for years and they do work after a
fashion but I agree with the person who categorised them as plastic junk.
The problem is that most people seem to think that because you moor from the
bow you must pick up the buoy from the bow. Our bow is quite high and we
are always short handed. So what you do is have a line long enough to reach
right aft. Lead it aft outside everything and get your crew to lie on the
deck at the lowest point even if it is quite far aft. He/she can then reach
the ring on the buoy and put the line through and then you go slow astern
while he/she walks forward with the rope end and hauls in the slack and
makes fast.- no problem. Do not get hooked on useless plastic gadgets.

Well, I use mine all the time, and it's not junk. Sure, if you continually
smash it against a metal buoy it won't last. It is plastic. Also, even from
the cockpit, the freeboard is sufficiently high that it's difficult to reach
the mooring ring.

We have and use one apparently made by a different manufacturer

Yes. Also, when needed, it (or one like it) can be helpful.
