A Real Race
I've been waiting since this afternoon to post this to the morons like
Dungmaster Sloco who race handicap. Today I was in a REAL sailboat race and here's how it went: I had no plans to sail today. I went to the yard to wash Heart of Gold down because we have a lot of folks sailing with us this weekend. After about an hour my buddy shows up to mess around with his J29. With a promise of "I just want to shake out the new #2", we set out for a planned hour of sailing. As we left I saw a fellow on his J27 (I recently sold him sails) pulling out. We ended up sailing together for a bit when he offered a little race...to the turning buoy at the Throgs Neck and under Stepping Stone back to City Island. For those less than familiar with these boats, a J29 outboard model with fractional risk is nearly dead even with a J27. Air was flukey, but it picked up as we approached the bridge and we grabbed a slightly crisper line of air and had a 3 or 4 boat lead. Then the air died for about 30 minutes and we were absolutely becalmed. We were close to firing up the Yamaha when we saw the J27 starting to move. In a few moments we were sailing near hull speed, with a very short lead on the J27. We "won" though it was clear how closely matched the boats are. I had the helm for most of it. My buddy says I stay in the groove better than he does and I should race. No interest for me, but we did have a nice sail. This was a real race, boat for boat. No silly handicaps. When the J29 rates 117 and the J27 rates 120, who even cares about gay handicaps. The boat that crosses first wins. Anyway....sailing tomorrow with Suzanne and Thomas, then doing a weekend trip through Monday. We don't know where we're sailing to yet. Perhaps back to Centreport to meet with friends. RB 35s5 NY |

A Real Race
Swabbie, you have to sail one design to be
in a real sailboat race. |

My point is that, beyond developing some skills on ones own tub, PHRF racing is NOT real racing and that's all Sloco can really do because he doesn't own a J35 or J24. RB 35s5 NY |

Yes, we know, they let you come and sit on their boats in races, but you aren't racing. Think about it. With your mass, they're using you for moveable ballast. Especially on J-boats. Moveable ballast is very important. RB 35s5 NY |

ROFLMAO! What a ******. Real race? No committe boat, no pre start, no handicap but not one design either. So what kind of real race was it? Even though their numbers might be close the longer water line wins everytime. You didn't drive a winner. You were supposed to win. This story was a little better than all the other yarns that the Boob spins about how he beat some otherr boat on a Sunday afternoon. Problem is, the people on the other boat never knew they were being tested. They were watching TV. |

No. Not EVEN close. They might look similar, but looks are about as
far as it goes. You're exposing yourself here. The J27 and Frac rig J29 are very close around the buoys. The masthead J29 is faster. Think about it. With your mass, they're using you for moveable ballast. Then why do they like me to dive the boat? RB 35s5 NY |

It was a FRIENDLY race, Sloco. We come from the same club and I've sailed both boats. They are very closely matched. It's more of a race that you typically do! RB 35s5 NY |

A Real Race
Always the line people use when they don't have the stones to bring
it out and mix it up. Yeah, we don't have the stones to "mix it up" with a bunch of Catalinas & Ericsons that think they are in a race because a local club had a 14 dollar plaque made. One design is racing. PHRF is family fun, if that's what you like. My ex-girlfriend used to race her J24 in one design. She agrees PHRF is a joke, even though she wins a lot in her Catalina 30 that hits it's rating so easily. She knows that many other boats don't. As I said...a joke! And you bought a boat that is part of that joke known by so many one design racers. RB 35s5 NY |
