The 15th Century BCE fresco of the Ship Parade at the West House in
the excavated town of Akrotiri on the island of Thera (now Santorini) depicts one of the ships under sail. I have seen several academic examinations of this ship and none of them really read like they were done by sailors. I have crewed on boats in the Philipines, Hawaii and the Chesapeake but always with the same 19th Century Bermuda sloop rig. This ship/boat carries a sail between two booms, which has been demonstrated to use brails to shorten sail and has been postulated to be able to cant the sail to replicate part of a lateen rig. You may have to hit the "enlarge" feature for the ship, which is just to the right of the middle of the picture. http://mmtaylor.net/Holiday2000/Lege...ineFresco/mari... Model http://www.travel-to-crete.com/photo.php?photo_id=8 I would appreciate any evaluation of this sail plan, c. 15 C BCE, or refernces to studies on this subject. |
