Even worse day for Sloco!

Well, I decided that owning a WRX was enough and passed on the new
one. Instead we have a Mazda Speed6 AWD coming next week. Silver, with
black interior.
Read it and weep, Sloco....

274 HP with 280 LBs of Torque
0-60 5.4 seconds
1/4 mile 13.85 seconds
Top Speed 150 MPH Limited
Top Speed 167 MPH Limiter removed

Outhandles the B Spec Subaru Legacy GT, the BMW 330 XI AWD and so on.
Basically it's a WRX, but with more power, speed, traction and
stability control and so on!

How's that lame Lincoln???!!!

When it comes to shear performance, the top car here is the Mitsubishi
Evo, but that builder's entries in the USA is still experiencing
quality control issues that keep many away. A Subaru STI is a monster
in itr's own right, but neither the Evo or STI are really well suited
for daily drivers with kids.
Even with the 274 HP, the Speed6 has flaws. I noticed that power
flattened out above 5000 RPM and the clutch is a bit touchy, though
Suzanne liked the 6 speed. For a four with a turbo there's amazing
torque on tap above 2000 RPM and the AWD hookup will leave even faster
rear wheel drivers in the dust of the line. At 130 MPH the car is rock
stable, but I have yet to drive on faster. On a twisty back road (all
we have here in Carmel), I found handling to be equal to the Subaru
WRX in capability, but the car was more confident and relaxed. The STI
and WRX handle just fine, but often feels more daring than it should.
They can be a bit twitchy on their short wheelbases. I don't want to
say that the Speed6 is "better" because they are really different
animals and the boy-racer set will always love the Subaru and Evo.
We'll have the car next week and I'll post a few pics. About 1200
dollars in light mods can boost to over 300 HP, but I think the car is
plenty fast as it stands. A new Speed6 is due in 2009, which is not
far off. I hope Mazda steps it up in a major way so I can trade in.
I wonder how Sloco's lame-from-day-one Lincoln is doing. It's no joke
that my Sedona van is faster!

We don't get a car called a Mazdaspeed 6 here,
Is this the same vehicle?
http://www.mazda.com.au/mazda6mps/

Same car, Probably some small differences. Here a lot of folks are
calling it a grown up STI, but I see it more as a properly worked Ford
Taurus SHO, if you ever got any of those in your parts.
When it comes to quality I think that all of the Korean/Japanese/
German builders are working hard. The occasional problems are gonna
happen, especially with performance designs. My motto and anyone elses
with a brain in their head: "Don't Buy an American Car." The USA
builders have zero respect for the consumer overall and it shows.
After 45 years of driving mostly American cars even my old man had to
throw up his hands and drives a Subaru Forester XT Turbo. He's a happy
guy now with a wagon that can pull with a Vette and still get a lot of
antiques in the back.

Haven't driven the new MX5, but we've owned a couple of Miatas in the past.
Great, fun little cars with handling that could stand a few more ponies up
front. I'm thinking the new car might be about right at--what--170bhp?

I'm helping a friend prodify his Miata (02) for SCCA racing. It should be
ready in about a month, which is a bit behind schedule, considering he's
already missed two events this spring. Should be a competitive car. The
engine has been blueprinted and is producing maximum power and torque,
according to Mazda specs. Tires have been a bit of a problem, but we've
finally settled on some Hoosier slicks, heavily shaved. Also going to use
Hoosier rain tires in the wet.

Max, while there are some seriously fast supercars, the Japanese have
matched them with cars like the STI and Evo, two cars that pull true
super-car numbers. An M5 won't dust an EVO. Still worse for a car like
the M5, cheap mods bring cars like the STI and Evo into a world of
speed that the M5 usually never sees. A stock EVO can pull 4.3 seconds
in 0-60 and do the quarter in 13 or less. Handling is true rally ready
level. The M5 is beautiful, the quality an experience all it's own.
But for shear driving enthusiasts you don't need an M5 any more. In
fact, when Nissan landed with the revised 300ZX twin turbo, it was
over then. Or for another good example, my Speed6 does just about
everything better than an Audi S4.

Max, a 100% stock Forester XT does 0-60 in 5.2 seconds and it takes
very little to get into the mid 4's. It's also AWD so the hook up is
pretty amazing. The Z06 can actually get under 4 seconds, so it's
pretty fast indeed. I would never buy a Vette because they still
aren't put together as well as a Kia Reo. Still, 190 MPH is pretty
amazing for any car and the Vette can do it...a whole lot faster than
even my 167 MPH top end Speed6. But in every day driving where it
sometimes snows, rains or the road is not track-smooth, the Vette has
drawbacks indeed.

So is the drivetrain more beefed up in the Forester turbo to handle the
extra torque generated by the turbo?

Don't think so.

If you drive it to take advantage of the engine you will pay for it with the
drivetrain.

Your warranty is void if you mod the car!

MAx, I think we have different definitions for Supercar. Handling to
me is the biggest element of what makes a car "great." Back in the day
my friends and I would laugh at straight line only metal like Grand
Nationals and Vettes. Either they couldn't handle or were very nervous
rides on any real twisty that wasn't perfectly smooth. No matter what
power a Mustang had, that fixed rear would always be the achilles
heal. A car like my Speed6 would murder a lot of faster cars with it's
refinded handling and quarter miles under 14 seconds is plenty of
power for the twisty runs...more than needed perhaps. These days there
are many cars pulling stock numbers that used to pretty rare. So for
me: if the car handles great and it can do a 1/4 mile in 5 seconds,
that's pretty "super." If it can do 165 MPH then it's a done deal. Now
there are cars that do 200 MPH and sub 4 second runs and quarters in
under 11 seconds. But they are usually not daily drivers. For example,
we could not use an STI as a daily driver with it's rally ready setup.
In that regard I would agree that an M5 is fantastic....fast AND
liveable day to day.
The Elise is the best handling car off the shelf so even without crazy
power it's certainly deserving of a supercar ranking. You also have to
give it up to the Elise because of the Toyota powerplant will be Miata
reliable. Talk about having your cake and eating it too.
One thing we can agree on...it's a fantastic time to be in love with
cars. Even my buddies BMW 330XI (that he bought used for a small sum
of 20K) is an amazingly refined car with plenty of fast fun on tap. As
you can probably tell I'm an AWD convert, which is why I chose the
Mazdaspeed6. I also live in a hilly windy area that can get snowy, so
I'd had to show some practicallity!

So are those who live in mountainous, jet stream terrain that get 20+ feet
of snow a year and drive front wheel drive cars better drivers than you?

In bad driving conditions it's not how fast you can go, it's how fast can
you stop. That is a matter of tires of which you know nothing!

Ground clearance is another factor you missed. But then you don't get
several 3 foot snowstorms a year otherwise you would be driving a Unimog! Or
too frightened to live there!

I think even a BMW M3 (07) or an M5 (06) will dust your Evo or WRX.

None of these cars are so different in speed that they'll dust each
other and I'll always prefer the AWD launch over rear wheel in spite
of the small weight penalty. In fact they are so close in speed that
small mods to any will give a leg up.

Watch him leave a huge brown streak in a few weeks when I finally get
around
to posting some sailing pictures. It will make him jump up and hit his
head
on his 7 foot ceiling in his subterranean home theatre (that's another
way
of saying basement).

You'll never post any real pics.
On the other hand you'll see pics of my new theatre and car as well as
videos of actual sailing. That's why none of you get any respect. I
think most of you are lairs who don't sail at all, let alone own a
damn thing.
And that's why I'm the troll king. It's because my trolls just reality
with an edge that highlights your own failures. That's why Joe, Dave,
Scotty and all the rest MUST respond to anything I type here. They
moan that it's really for fun and so on. But the truth is rather
painful for them.
Oh, and your comment on the lawyer for property shows you haven't any
idea about how things work. Why would a loser on a bid have our new
phone #? Of course they called our closing attorney who is also our
accountant.
I remember when you could avoid such silly beatings by googling up
some facts, though common sense should have prevailed. We did agree to
sell.

Then you "gave" it to the old man.

Now he's driving a Forester!

He's driving both, but the Tribeca is sitting in my driveway at the
moment. Suzanne's using it for her runs for the hospital until the
Speed6 is here.
As for the Kia, it's our #1 car. Thomas loves it and it's what we take
to the club since it can hold whatever we need. We'll be keeping it
until the Subaru van comes out in 2009. My car was effected by only a
single recall, fixed while I got one of the free oil changes!
Great van and still like new in every way.

OK another kiddie car rice
rocket. Not impressed. I've already owned one of the worlds fastest
accelerating production cars years

It's so funny to read Sloco's girly responses. He thinks fast
acceleration is what it's all about, but modern cars have achieved new
levels of refinement in handling AND acceleration. The Mazdaspeed6 is
fast, but that's not it's best quality.
For those wo don't know....Sloco owns a hilarious and dated Lincoln
that is slower than my van. Documented!
Apparently Sloco has red lights on his highways!

It's not a supercar at all. But it is probably the best handling car you
can buy for under $100K. The Exige I have on order is a sport
version--read: lighter and suspended more for the track. It will
probably
see as much track mileage as road time. I don't have time for an SCCA
campaign, but I can do the occasional track day.

Max

MAx, I think we have different definitions for Supercar. Handling to
me is the biggest element of what makes a car "great." Back in the day
my friends and I would laugh at straight line only metal like Grand
Nationals and Vettes.

First let me state categorically that I don't like Corvettes. Their FRP
bodies are a joke, and they rattle miserably after only a few road miles.
That said, it's obvious you haven't driven one recently. They are anything
but "straight-line only metal." They handle remarkably well, and it takes
very little suspension and frame work to prodify one for competitive SCCA
racing. Once set up properly they are a bitch to beat. Only the Dodge
Viper can compete in that price range. And of course with over 500 bhp, the
Corvette is anything but slow or sluggish. In a year or two the Corvette ZO6
will have over 600 bhp.

Either they couldn't handle or were very nervous
rides on any real twisty that wasn't perfectly smooth.

Since the early 90s, the Vettes have been superb handling vehicles. Are you
referring to the older models? Some early Vettes (Stingrays, etc.) weren't
terribly competent on winding pavement.

No matter what
power a Mustang had, that fixed rear would always be the achilles
heal.

Naught but a muscle car. Not great handlers without one hell of a lot of
suspension modification.

A car like my Speed6 would murder a lot of faster cars with it's
refinded handling and quarter miles under 14 seconds is plenty of
power for the twisty runs...more than needed perhaps.

The Mazdaspeed 6 is indeed a very competent automobile, both on the track
and on pavement, but I believe you've greatly overstated its abilties. It
is nowhere in the handling league with Vipers, Corvettes, and such. And my
forthcoming Exige will outhandle everything we've mentioned so far. The
demo Elise I drove--not a sport version, incidentally--simply blew me away.
I had to own one.

These days there
are many cars pulling stock numbers that used to pretty rare.

Very true.

So for
me: if the car handles great and it can do a 1/4 mile in 5 seconds,
that's pretty "super." If it can do 165 MPH then it's a done deal.

It's governed to do quite a bit less than that. Remove the governor and you
can kiss your warranty goodbye.

Now
there are cars that do 200 MPH and sub 4 second runs and quarters in
under 11 seconds. But they are usually not daily drivers. For example,
we could not use an STI as a daily driver with it's rally ready setup.

Doubtful if anyone could, but properly set up for Euro.rally, it would cost
more than all the cars we've mentioned so far, COMBINED.

The Elise (roadster) and Exige (coupe) are not supercars. Handling may be
on par with supercars, but they lack the raw horsepower to be supercars. An
Exige with, say, 400 bhp, would indeed be a supercar. With the Toyota mill
they aren't slow, but they are far from supercar fast.

AWD is nice, especially in crap weather. It even does well on the track, if
engineered properly. My BMW 330 Ci (coupe, not convertible) obviously
doesn't have it, but I think it's a fair trade to have RWD in a BMW as
opposed to AWD. I have an additional set of rims with winter
ultra-performance tires in addition to the M rims with ultra-performance
tires for summer use. Both get me around just fine, and I prefer the RWD
for twisty roads.

Supercars: Porsche GT3 or McLaren, Ferraris, Aston Martin Vantage, Saleen
S7, Ford GT, Dodge Viper, Corvette ZO6, stuff like that.
