Cheers Marty They're working on stem cell reserach to regrow the macula but it is a long way off....they can get it to grow but they can't get it to stop growing...I'll be dead before they get it right but at least my grandkids who ahve the same problem will ahve a chance... |

Joe I don't have AMD so it's neither here nor there...that's the one thing about what I do have...the chances of getting AMD on top of it are somewhere close to nil... |

I wasn't aware you have macular degeneration, Katy. Do you know specifically what type? Is it exudative or dry? And have they tried anti-VEGF therapy? Max |

Max Has been exudative in the past..during pregnancies mostly and one time around 1984 (that's when I also ahd the retinal detachment and had the cryo and the weld) Has been dry since...and no...I ...I am diagnosed as dystrophic...I have juvenile macular degeneration with High myopia and coloboma (not the cat eyed type but the optic nerve type where the back lkof the eye hasn't closed...) and no..that therapy isn't available to me (and believe me, I have been to some of the best retinal specialists in the US)...My first bout of wet was at the age of 19, but it cleared up soon after...I spent my 20th year unable to drive or read and then it cleared up...has been a seesaw ever since with long periods of remission...I have been lucky... |

I know what it means. Didja forget what I do? Or were you elucidating for the masses? and no..that therapy isn't available to me (and believe me, I have been to some of the best retinal specialists in the US)... If your maculopathy is non-exudative, anti-VEGF isn't an option. For the masses, VEGF is a substance released by necrotic (dying or dead) tissue which stimulates neovascular proliferation. New blood vessels grow into areas where they cause problems from leakage, such as under the macula. Anti-VEGF therapy tends to inhibit the process before it begins. My first bout of wet was at the age of 19, but it cleared up soon after...I spent my 20th year unable to drive or read and then it cleared up...has been a seesaw ever since with long periods of remission...I have been lucky... If you re-enter a period of wet maculopathy, ask about anti-VEGF drugs. Max |
