Default looking for a good hand held GPS

At this point, I'm still using my old Garmin III Plus.

I'm looking to stay with hand held but don't really know how the
technology has changed in the last few years (I've had this about 5
years). I love the fact that I can map out a route on the computer and
upload/download waypoints, tracks, and routes from and to my computer.

I'd like a slightly bigger, color screen. Can anyone recommend a good
unit under $1000? Must be able to plan trips with computer and save logs
of trips.

TIA
Scout

I'd look at one of those PDA's that combine phone, pda and gps.

Look, but don't buy. Not a great idea to have all your proverbial eggs in
one basket. If it goes overboard, or just quits working, you've lost your
navigation, phone, and your address book. Not to mention that they are
about as user friendly as MS DOS. Ever try using those tiny buttons with
a pair of gloves in a pitching cockpit with spray coming over the top of
the dodger when the temp is around 35F?

All good points. You can back up all the info on a computer (supposedly) and
a handheld is relied upon as a backup usually. The PDA's use the IrDA link
to back themselves up. If I were in an environment like you describe I'd
have it in one of those waterproof see through "baggies" with it tethered
around my neck. Can't get around the small keypad though.
