Default looking for a good hand held GPS

At this point, I'm still using my old Garmin III Plus.

I'm looking to stay with hand held but don't really know how the technology
has changed in the last few years (I've had this about 5 years). I love the
fact that I can map out a route on the computer and upload/download
waypoints, tracks, and routes from and to my computer.

I'd like a slightly bigger, color screen. Can anyone recommend a good unit
under $1000? Must be able to plan trips with computer and save logs of
trips.

TIA
Scout

Check out a Lowrance Finder H2OC. It does everything and it costs about half of
what Garmins with similar features have. It comes with a computer cable. It uses little
tiny secure data cards about the size of a postage stamp. You can even get a little secure
data card reader writer to transfer maps and stuff from computer to hand held. You can
use it for car trips if you get the USA highway data card. I used to get lost. I don't get lost
anymore using the Lowrance.
You won't find a better hand held for twice the price.

Cheers,
Ellen

On another list I'm on,whenever that question comes up (
about every 4th month) most votes go to the Garmin 76c, or
76 CS mapping. Personally, I'm still using the little
Magellan 100 that Cadillac gave out for free about 10 years
ago.

So you drove one of those homely, German-built, compact Caddy's too, eh, in
order to get the free GPS?

No. The salesman took one look at me and asked, ''do you
just want the free GPS?''. No test drive.

A manly response! I have/had both models of the GPS 12. I still have the GPS
12 with the 12 satellite capability. I gave the older model with the 6
satellite capability to a friend. The old model took a week to lock on. Real
manly men don't need maps. I also have a Garmin etrex and edge 205. No maps
there either! None of my GPS units have mapping capability.
