That certainly carries the ring of truth: "scrambling" a
helicopter for an air intercept.

Sure is. Tell me though, what's the platform and what's the
loadout for air-to-air mission, ANY current U.S. military
rotating-wing unit (much less carrier cert)?

And why would they launch more fighters when they always
have a CAP overhead?

It's not just bull****, it's silly.

thats not the point Katy, no(non space) flying object should be
anywhere near
that close to a carrier without permission. If it were a drone the Navy
would have taken it out.

The Iranians are just fluffing themself up to make thier capabilities
look like more than they are. After all if you can get a drone that
close surely you can get a missle that close.

It's total BS.

Well, that's basically true. Although some of the details of
specific gear is top secret, and you're not going to see
that by looking at the ship.

The only value in watching carrier deck ops is if there are
specialists who can tell what planes are being readied with
what sort of loadout, then you can predict what their
mission will be. I strongly doubt there are any Iranians
with that kind of knowledge & experience, even if they did
have drone watching (which I also strongly doubt).

AIM-9 air to air missile on:

AH-64.

AH-1Z:

AH-1W Flying off of the USS Bataan with AIM-9 missiles:

The real question: is the heat signature of the drone enough for any missile
in the Navy inventory? Probably not. No fighter jet will lock onto that slow
moving, small drone. So send a helicopter up with a 30 caliber machine gun
and knock it out of the sky.

And why would they launch more fighters when they always have a CAP
overhead?

The CAP flies a 200 mile radius, it's not overhead.

It's not just bull****, it's silly.

It is silly to try and use million dollar missiles to knock a large toy RC
plane out of the sky. The Bismarck was sunk by biplanes because the gun
directors on the Bismarck were not calibrated for such slow flying planes.
Will history repeat itself?
