BTW, I recall being offered an 'early out.' I think that the offer was
made to all officers below Captain. There was severance pay involved. I
chose not to. Others chose to take the offer. IIRC, it was voluntary.
Some 'low speed, high drag' types may have been forced out, but the
overall effect would be that the higher-quality officers would remain.

Also IIRC, so many took it that there was a shortage of company-grade
officers and they needed to suddenly recruit more. Typical military...
