You're joking right? Aussie-land has a lot to win or lose by what we do or
don't do in a week. -- "j" ganz @@ www.sailnow.com "Maxprop" wrote in message .net... "Capt. JG" wrote in message ... OzOne wrote in message ... You guys crack me up! Because of something that one person says, something that may or may not have been a badly spun joke, you're prepared to forget everything that GWB has done 'for' your country and vote his politics back into power...... If it wasn't so sad, it would be funny. It's funny for Ozzy. He has absolutely nothing at stake in this election. Max |

What I'm anxiously awaiting is the bitter fight between Hillary, Kerry, Edwards, Obama, Bayh, Gore (?) and ??? in about a year. Should be fun watching the Democrats once again fractionate themselves while someone like John McCain waltzes into the GOP nomination. Looking at it from this great Socialist bastion to your north, I have to agree with you. I don't think the Dems have a chance, no matter who they nominate, the poor ******* will be like a race horse with two jockeys facing opposite directions. Cheers Marty |

I would not pay so much if I were not forced to. And if I felt the need to give to my country lots-0-cash, I assure you I could do a better job of spending the money then the politicans/govt. does. Nobody holds a gun to their head and makes them re-up. Duh. They do it because they're patriots. Is that the only reason? Hm. While I am patriotic, I served for 21 years for a host of other reasons. You get a nice retirement; you get good educational benefits (the main reason that I joined back in 1984, BTW. I was a starving college student.); you get medical, dental, cheap life insurance, a chance to see the world, adventure, and a sense on comeraderie. What do the soldiers themselves say? "With an improving economy in 2004 as measured by unemployment rate, recruiters have experienced challenges to signing up new recruits. Although access to post-high school opportunities has expanded in recent years, research suggests that the Service recruiting campaigns are having an impact on the youth of our country. Among today's youth, the military is perceived as providing opportunities, furthering education, helping individuals grow and mature, and contributing to the country." http://www.dod.gov/prhome/poprep2004...ons/index.html Some people do it because it's the only way to break out of the slums, or to get trained on a certain job, or for many, many other reasons. You hold their hands like they were little kids. You don't give them any credit. You've obviously never commanded a military unit. Sometimes, even often, it's very much like parenting young children. You act like they're stupid and helpless. This insults them. Your as bad as Senator Kerry. Personally, I think a draft would be a good thing. With an all-volunteer military you end up with a military class much like the Romans had. Diluting it by rotating non-professionals through is not a bad thing. And sharing the burden is the right thing to do. You are not considering, for example, the impact of multiple deployments on military families, among other things (and from the party whose mantra is 'family values.' LOL!). And most enlisted soldiers do come from poorer socio-economic backgrounds. That's one reason why officers get commissioned through multiple sources. The fear is that if all officers only come through the service academies, there's a much higher likelihood of a coup, or other 'bad' stuff happening. If you dilute the officers from the academies with ROTC, OCS, direct, and other commissioning sources, this is less likely to occur. A draft, or a national service requirement, can serve the same purpose. Deferments should be excluded. That would mean that even Dick Cheney would have to serve. I find it amusing that the people who have never served seem to have the strongest opinions about the military. So now this election now becomes a referendum on John Kerry in some people's minds. LOL! The stupidity of some people never fails to amuse me. |

Joe,
As "Commander-in-Chief" Bush is Stuck in Iraq, just as his troops are. BUSH is the reason our military is there. We won the War but are rather rapidly Losing the Peace. Iraq is not a US colony. Let's get our "Military Ass" out of there AND;---- I hope Kerry doesn't run against the GOP in '08. I have to agree, he is a FN. I truly want to vote against "George 2nd" I don't think I could Vote for Kerry. http://community.webtv.net/tassail/ILLDRINKTOTHAT |

People join the military to fight. What unit were you in? (And please provide a citation. I provided one already from the DoD that shows this claim is inaccurate.) |

BTW I joined the military to travel and go to sea, I could have made more money elsewhere. Joe Joe, If your neighbor came over and demanded 45% of your pay else he would lock you up or confiscate your possessions - in some states it would be legal to shoot him. If several of your neighbors came over and did the same, it's still theft. If the majority of the people in Texas did that to you it is still theft. Only legitimate government has the power to tax. It is a delegated power in the Constitution. The Constitution also gives Congress the power to "raise and support Armies" and "To make all Laws which shall be necessary and proper for carrying into Execution the foregoing Powers," A draft at some times is necessary and proper to raise an Army. What is striking is that the Democrats heavily favor a draft and higher taxes. Why do they always want to punish people who have comitted no crime? It's really ridiculous, they condemn the people they send off to war and they condemn the rich whose money they steal. Why aren't they condemning themselves for the absolute power they seek? The Democrats are all about forcing others. Ever hear a Democrat in recent decades call for lower taxes and more individual freedom? Do they even mention individuals? They do, but in a negative connotation - "some wacko-individualist type" or "some selfish individual". In all this campaigning what have the Democrats stood for? Withdrawal from a war they just voted us into? Making life simpler and better for Americans by restructuring the tax code? School choice? The Democrats are in the back pocket of special interests, particularly the interests of dying antiquated, dead end ways - teacher's unions and unions in general, anti-globalization lobby, pseudo science with man causing global warming and the ozone hole, big government (except for self defense) and a host of other ridiculous causes. Their solutions are not the get-dirty, let's fix them type but rather the throw money feel good type. Look into the junk drawer on your work bench. That is the Democrat party. A hodge podge of special interests and odd pieces that should have been discarded a long time ago. There is no unifying philosophy or message except "we are against the other guys", "we are for more taxes", "we will punish you", "you should not drive that car". Why such underlying guilt? Why such a need to control? What kind of people are these? It's a party run amok by emotion and very little thinking. Joe, this election is very important. The Democrats haven't offered an alternative, they just want to punish. Pull that lever for the Republicans. Eventually the Democrats will offer us a better choice, but they aren't now or in the near future. The Democrats are running on Republican failures, not on Democrat strengths. Get everyone you know to vote Republican. |
