You are correct that I do not know Doug personally.

In other words, you make your assertions about my knowledge,
skills, activities, in complete ignorance of them.

Charlie Morgan wrote:
No. I make a fair ansd reasonable judgement about you based on your
participation here.

Really? Let's take a look at that premise.

I assert that I sail(ed) a Lightning. There are pictures of
me sailing a Lightning and my name on various Lightning
class & regatta websites which are not under my control. You
conclude I lied about owning/sailing/racing Lightning? Not
only that but a purple one (why would anybody lie about that)?

I assert that my wife & I have owned & sailed & cruised a
Hunter 19. Pictures etc etc.

I assert that I am building a carbon fiber dinghy. Perhaps
an overly ambitious project but heck it's my money. Why
would anybody lie about such a thing, aside from the
pictures I've shown of the boat in various stages of progress?

I assert that I owned & sailed & raced a Johnson 18. Not
only have I shown pics of myself & my wife sailing it, but
once again my name is on various other websites. You got my
phone # and old address from the Johnson 18 class website,
so if I lied about that it makes you look pretty stupid.

So, let's go back and ask again, why do you think I make
untrue statements? Looks like a pretty good & verifiable
record so far.

Actually, you'd be uneasy if you realized how much I know
about you.

Yeah, you keep saying that, but you are totally clueless, as has been
demonstrated countless times. You don't even know my first name.

Go ahead. Tell us! Give me a shred of evidence that you know anything about me
personally.

Why would I do that? It would give away an advantage to no
purpose. Unlike you I have little reason to bluster & brag
on the internet.

.... You spent months convinced I was Bobsprit posting under another
name

I'm still not convinced

... because your overblown ego couldn;t accept that more than one person
thought you were a blowhard jerk.

Not really, it's more because the odds are very small that 2
persons with the exact same socio-pathology and the same
vocabulary would show up in this tiny corner of cyberspace.

It also strikes me as very unlikely that another person
would be so determined to take revenge for slights against
Bobsprit. It also strikes me as unlikely that a another
person would include me as a target of revenge when I have
not done anything to Bobsprit, such as posting his address
or insulting his wife; yet this is the "reason" you gave for
posting what you thought was my address and cyber-stalking
my wife. OTOH Bobsprit has long been as spiteful &
hate-filled toward me as his tiny putrid self can be.

... Being able to read and understand headers
might have saved you a lot of embarrassment.

Being able to hop proxies more adroitly might save you a
date in court, or worse.

Did you get fired for your little stalking escapade or just
chewed out? See, I admit I don't know... I also don't care.

Agreed, but then it's also true that you can learn a lot
about how a boat sails... specifically, what techniques it
rewards and which ones it doesn't... sailing a sistership.

Also agreed. It's a great way to get a good (or bad) impression of a
particular boat. I sailed dozens of different boats for five years (or
something like that) before getting serious about buying the Sabre.

The vast majority of production boats are far from
one-design, details of hull construction (if not actual hull
shape) and rig vary tremendously over a production run.
Still, the basic proportions of hull, foils, rig, etc are so
close that the boats will behave pretty much the same. Then
again, to jump on a sisership with different sails &
different tuning might give you the impression that it's a
completely different boat.

As for the specifics of a given boat's gear, deck layout,
wiring, etc etc... you're right on, a sistership is useless
as a teaching platform.

Yep. For general impressions and such, they're fine, but for a
purchase, no way.

I've been looking (seriously looking) since last Winter. I was looking
less seriously for about a year total.. work kept getting in the
way. Typically out here Spring through Summer isn't a good time to buy
a boat... lots of buyers, not many sellers, so they jack up the
price. I pretty much gave up last month, figuring I'd wait until the
next low season in Nov thru March. I was browsing through the
electronic edition of Latitude 38 (www.lat38.com) and saw the
listing. I had heard Sabres, but never sailed on one before. Gave him
a call, turns out a death in the family precipitated the sale. Sad
really, and the owner was really a nice guy. He was asking a fair
price, and after inspection, I offered him a bit less than the
asking. He accepted it, we arranged a sea trial, and at the conclusion
I gave him a deposit and we arranged for a haul/survey.

About a week prior to the survey, he called me up, very apologetic,
saying that he had mis-represented the boat... listed it as a 1985,
when in fact it was a 1983. I told him that I was still very
interested, and he immediately took $2K off the agreed upon price, and
he offered to pay for the survey. He even paid for the engine oil
analysis.

I think I'd like to stay in touch with him. He just about broke down
when I handed him the final check.
