I don't have much experience with these poles (that's the idea here, to at last use the damn thing) but I assume that the slide is ,was, spring loaded , and that the opening at the end of the pole is, indeed , the end of the slide - any verification of this would help - It might be locked up with mineral deposits, sodium and calcium, you might try to soak it in vinegar.
