Nothing in that sentence says he's buying a boat before learning to sail. And even if he went about it that way, it's his business. Stop trying to protect your sad little world. It's so obvious that the guy will "start" ahead of you, so just get over it. Along with Capt. Neal, John Cairns and Doug, you're the king of bad boat choices.
