Rob claims he's sailing for a "couple of hours" in 30 kt gust. Uhhh...Joe? Didn't you claim that you're a captain or something and that you know how to sail? Do you realize that a couple of hours in a 30 knot gust wouldn't be a gust at all; it would be wind speed. Here, allow me to correct you once again... Gust: 1 : a sudden brief rush of wind Sort of like when your old lady opens her legs! But in any case, even simple weather terminology is beyond you. Then again, you couldn't even read the weather chart I posted. And so....BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA! RB 35s5 NY |

Here's the actual report from the station about 3 miles south of where
booby sort of claims that he sailed. http://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/dat...at=View+Plo t or http://tinyurl.com/ptkc3 The chart shows that the wind was below 6 kts until around 3pm, when it climbed to 10. At 6 pm it jumped to 15, with gusts of 18, and got a bit stronger after dark. Now, I have claimed that "all weather is local" but it does seem unlikely that King's Point, which is pretty well exposed to the South and West, would have much different wind from an area just a few miles away, actually within sight. Of course, its doubtful that Booby actually stayed out when the wind started to pick up. In fact, he never quite says that he was there, he only claims that "most boats were sent home." It's funny to watch how the story changes with time. His first two posts after the sail never mention wind, then the next morning he mentions reefing and "heavy air." One would think that if he really experienced 30 knots he would be eager to mention it right away. Later in the day, after hearing from other boaters, he suddenly claims it was "gusting to 30 knots for two hours" and "It sent most boats home by 5:30." Note that at 5:30 King's Point, just 3 miles south, only shows 10, gusting to 12 at that point. Then realizing his blunder, he starts backpedaling, claiming it was at least 20. Then he claims victory by citing a weather station 35 miles away, on the South side of Long Island, that actually on showed a sustained wind of 16 knots. My guess is that Booby went out for about an hour, and when the wind picked up to 15, he took an a reef and headed home. BTW, he claims to have been out at sunset, but that was at 8:30 and he posted at 9:07 that night. And, while there might be a "funnel affect" around Execution Rock in a NE wind, this was a SW, so this area is where the Sound is opening up to the wind, not funneling. Its easier to believe that Booby's friend at Throgs Neck had some gusts from the funneling. Capt. Rob wrote: Why don't you post a weather report from LIS? Why? La Guardia Airport is closer to Execution Rock than Kings Point?
Right, Booby, you sure know your home waters. The US Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point is about 2 miles south of your slip! What a jackass! La Guardia is about 8 miles west, in a totally different geography, and is notorious for high wind readings. KP, right on the water, didn't record steady wind over 16 knots that evening. Yes, there might have been a few gusts up to 22, but in fact LGA only reports a knot or so higher. This is a huge difference from 30 knots. And I stand by the timeline - you made two posts the night before mentioning "heavy air," and it was the almost a day after the fact that you mentioned 30 knots. You did mention in the second post after the sail that you tested out reefs, but you never mentioned the wind. Capt. Rob wrote: It's funny to watch how the story changes with time. You have a perfect record when it comes to refuting and steamrolling the
great bloviator. Once again you've done it. I sincerely wish you would post more frequently and continue to lance the great syphillitic pustule. Good job. Glory to Google! Thanks. Just trying to be of help. Its not uncommon for daysailors in tender boats who stare at instruments to overestimate the wind. When a lightweight boat starts getting knocked around, the masthead sensor takes on a life of its own. A quick heel can move the sensor at 50 feet per second, which just happens to be 30 knots! This happens every time Booby steps on board, so he always has that as his "Max Wind Speed" reading. On the LIS water quality issue, I'm surprised you didn't bring up the chronic beach closings in Booby's area. The last few years had major shutdowns, and this year isn't starting too well: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpag... BC0A961958260 "Already this summer, beaches have been closed in New York City (in the Bronx) and in nearby Westchester County, Stamford and Greenwich, Conn. The worst problems, in Westchester, came in June after an unmanned sewage pumping station in the Bronx malfunctioned and spewed millions of gallons of raw sewage into a tributary of the East River." Note also the beach closings in the Bronx and Westchester in 2004: http://www.nrdc.org/water/oceans/ttw/sumnewy.pdf In particular, the Morris Yacht and Beach Club (that's the one on City Island that had the recent fire) seemed to be closed half the Summer. Or you could consider the water quality buoys, including Execution Rock, which generally show Oxygen levels too low to support fish life. http://www.mysound.uconn.edu/ In fact, the bottom west of Oyster Bay has had chronic hypoxia for all of the last decade. http://www.longislandsoundstudy.net/...section2_1.pdf Or you could consider the collapse of the lobster and oyster harvest over the last 15 years. Much is explained at: http://www.longislandsoundstudy.net/indicators/ Jeff, between cruises for a week or so |
