Well its been raing and lightning all weekend, and is suppose to thru
the 4th.
Had a ladie and 13 YO girl at the beach strunk yesterday.

Kinda makes me skiddish sailing the Dink hearing the thunder all
around.

Don't know how anyone could stand living on a plastic sailboat with a
metal mast, you're just asking for trouble. Same with cruising boats.

I've also always been a bit concerned, but I think strikes are fairly rare.
I've been sailing during lightning (not by choice, we were trying to get
back), and it was landing all around us, but nothing hit. That was on Lake
Tahoe.

I once did a calculation about the probability of a boat being hit here
in Florida nad was shocked to see how high it was. Further checking
with stats on the net showed my calc was close to being accurate. I
forget the numbers though. However, the point is that anybody who
doesnt take lightning seriously is foolish. A lone boat on a huge
ground plane with a sharp conductor sticking up is lightning bait.

How high is it? Also, I don't live/sail in Florida.

I really do not remember the numbers but they affirmed my fear of
lightning. Basically, you are most vulnerable when yours is the only
boat for a quarter mile or so. Being in a group of boats (as in a
marina) makes things better although the collective probability of
being struck is high. Basically, stay out of thunderstorms.

Redcloud is steel, the current travel thru the hull to the water,
It's the birdcage effect. One time I had a TV antenna attached to the
forward stay and it blew up the TV. I have 2 arc marks attop the main
mast.

The guy who was in the next slip has a P40 that got struck, it melted
all the eletronics and wiring in the boat. 43K in damage.

Yes we were aboard both time, yes it was loud. More suprising than
anything.

The TV that blew was on the forward bunkrooms forward bulkhead. When
the lightning struck a severe very colorful plasma came about 14" out
the screen, then it just smouldered for a while. The PCB on the TV was
melted .

The second time I was in the wheelhouse looking thru the overhead
hatch and saw the bolt strike the main, no damage or problems at all. I
was waiting and expecting that one, the sky was kinda greenish and
lightning was discharging all around.
