The highly-respected hurricane prognosticator, Dr. William
Gray is predicting nine hurricanes for the upcoming 2006 season and 17 named storms. He predicts five of the hurricanes will be "intense" -category three or greater. Perhaps the most unsettling prediction, is that there is a 82% chance that one of the major hurricanes will come ashore somewhere in the United States. (The average for the last century is 52%.)
