He's sailing, Rob. such a shock for this newsgroup!

Unfortunately I didn't sail.

My poor old boxer had to be put down after being my best mate for 11
years.
Got ill while I was away skiing and was diagnosed with lung cancer.
Pretty bloody agressive it was too, almost 8 weeks to the day it was
the end.
Had a great few weeks with him, spoiled him rotten, took him swimming
and generally had a ball while the drugs were on top of it.
Unfortunately it couldn't last and yesterday he wasn't too good, last
night, I spent the whole night up, with him lying on the lounge and
his head in my lap calming him through his pain.
Early this morning, I rang the vet and told her the bad news, she'd
been expecting it and asked me to bring him straight down.

Anyway, he's gone now and it'll be another 5 years or so before I'll
want to begin the whole process once again.
It's worth it, but jeez when the end comes, it sure messes you up.

My sincerest condolences, Oz. Despite what anyone says, pets, like yours,
are family, and when they die it's a lengthy grieving process.

Great looking dog, OZ. Sorry about the ending. If science wanted to do
something really worthwhile, they could look for a way to extend dog life
so that wouldn't have to lose our faithful companions so early.

That's a good point. During the past century the mean human life expectancy
has increased nearly 20 years. During that same period the various breeds
of dogs have netted a year, if that, on average.

Sorry to hear it Oz. I lost my buddy after 16 years of
companionship. I haven't gotten a new dog yet. It's been
five years and I'm just about ready to get another one.

16 years!
Wow, what was he?
Best I've had was 12 and again, it was a quick end with cancer,
probably the most common killer of the breed.

I know how you feel, 5 years is about what it takes me too.

I said after the last one "never again" but my kids needed to grow up
with a dog.
This time...well, never again....

The general rule is that the larger the breed the shorter the lifespan. Of
course there are exceptions, but Irish Wolfhounds live about 6-8 years while
it's not uncommon for small terriers and miniature breeds to live well into
the teens. Our two golden retrievers lived to ages 11 and 13 respectively.
A friend's miniature dachshund lived to 18.

My condolances Oz, losing a dog is damn near as bad as loosing a close
friend.

Cheers

What Happened Ozzy?

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn's rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die
