"DSK" wrote So tell us what your boat's name is, and why you named it that. I renamed my Ericson ECHO because the previous name Intrepid was not only common, but for some reason everyone screwed it up. I decided on ECHO because it is short enough to fit on a narrow transom, it is a phonetic letter, and very easy to use on the radio. I'm an Electrical Engineer and my Ham radio Call Sign is N1EE. So far no one has screwed up the name on the radio or otherwise. My view is boat names belong on the transom and should be both easy to read at a great distance-which means a simple block font a large size and an uncomplicated name to both read and understand. My Etchells is named HOOT. I stole the name from a boat sold by a former Etchells skipper of mine. When he sold his previous boat, an Olson 30 named HOOT, the new owners insisted on keeping the name. HOOT has a wide reputation on the SF Bay and has had it's picture in Lat-38 many times. The was one photo that was either a cover of full page spread of it broaching under the Golden Gate Bridge. Since I'm on the east coast, I figured that was far enough away. For a future project, I have a cool graphic of an owl I want to paint on a white spinnaker. I have two Sunfishes, PATRIOT and a new one named THREAT that will be a loaner boat for visiting friends. I named PATRIOT after the sail I chose for the boat which was red, white, and blue. Being a Patriots fan, it was an easy choice. When I bought the second boat, I wanted a name that would complement the first. I thought of SCUD, which means move very quickly or hastily, and the military association between the two missiles is obvious, however I didn't like the sound of it. I chose THREAT because of the current poliltical situation where PATRIOTs are fighting THREATs, both foreign and domestic. |
