I have a new Standard Knot Log but the little prop thing has fouled so
it doesnt turn. I am hesitant to pull it out to clean it although I
knwo I can plug the hole in time. I dont want to spend any time in the
water at the dock due to the 8' gator nearby. Is this worth worrying
about? I have never had one in all these years of sailing.

Yeah, I use mine, it always-or at least regularly-gets fouled, only takes a
minute to clean it and put it back. I usually use a small rag to plug it,
the use the rag to clean up the water.

We use outs but I think if an 8' gator was living under my boat, I
could be convinced it wasn't that important.

I have a signet knot log, and find that I can swap it with the "butt plug"
quick enough that only a half cup or so of water gets in. I only put the paddle
unit in when I am going sailing and know I'll want it. Most of the time, I do
without, as I get SOG from my GPS, and that's all I really need. There isno
need or advantage to going in the water to clean it. You can do a much better
job from inside the boat.

Hey, once you get past the thought of putting a temporary hole in your
boat while it is in the water it is not a big deal. Had one, pulled
it to clean often, never sunk the boat.
