Can't you see that my post about Virginia *proved* that Americans are the most sanctimonious race on Earth? Wjhy should we reiyterate the obvious? I've been to Manteo and the Roanoke colony's landing place and live in the state of VA. Virginia Dare was the child of British parents so therfore was named after something British, not American. Virginia was named by Sir Walter Raleigh in honour of Queen Elizabeth the First. On his way back from America, he passed through Ireland ... and the village of Baile Atha Lir. He renamed Baile Atha Lir "Virginia". I come from the only town in Europe that is named after a place in America. Irony is a foreign word in America ..... Regards Donal -- And if the Irish had been smarter, they would have renamed it as soon as they got rid of British rule. Do you think the average Canadian would have known that? Or Australian? It is an obscure factoid...and means nothing in the scheme of things except to show that your obsessive compulsion to denigrate Americans is running away with you. For some reason, you feel that British history is the end all and be all of the world. Well, maybe it used to be, but it isn't anymore. Get over it. |

"Donal" wrote in message ... Maxprop, Your arrogance is extremely impressive. Why, thank you. The Irish don't go around bombing countries that they dissapprove of!! No, but they do go around bombing individuals they disapprove of. And I've no doubt that if the PIRA had possessed nuclear weapons, London would now be a collection of rubble and charred black glass. Do you really think that the Irish are more sanctimonious than the Americans? First, Donal, I'm sure you don't include yourself among those Irish terrorists who car bombed their way through the past half century. I doubt if you were a member of the latter iteration of Sinn Fein or the IRA. Nor, I suspect, were your ancestors part of the Irish sympathetic movement toward the Nazis during WWII. So why do you automatically lump all Americans in with those who instigate wars? Your arrogance is equally impressive, and I mean that in the most complimentary way. ;-) I dissaprove of sanctimonious people because they are usually stupid, and they allow their idiotic opinions to influence their views. That's a rather nasty self-deprecating incrimination, doncha think? Max |
Hello to all
Also, they wanted to start shooting at each other almost
immediately after the English left. Donal wrote: That is very true..... You probably know as much about this as I do. I suspect that this was censored from my early education. Nobody learns an honest history of their own country, at least, not the first time around. In some ways this is good, maybe if we weren't stuffed with romantic myths at an early age, then nobody would be loyal to anything. One of the things I admire about the Irish people is that very few of them seem bitter about the past... and that seems to have been the case even before the current era of prosperity. I base this on a personal observation, only about a dozen people I talked to and perhaps a hundred that I observed. In particular, I had several fairly long discussions with an old harbor pilot and a couple of older sailors (in the Kinsale & Cobh areas). My gut feeling is that there was always a connection to prosperity. For many people... perhaps most... yes of course. The average person would rather raise a family is peace than go around throwing bombs, or even recruiting suicide bombers. My younger brother, who is only four years younger than I am, has always felt that Northern Ireland would be too expensive to control. My feelings were much more nationalistic. I had a romantic dream about a united Ireland. I believe that our differences can be explained by the different education that we received. Sure. Not just education but also the differing attitudes of one's peer group at an early age. For example, when I was a kid, people around here talked about what their great-grand-daddies did in the Civil War, sort of like the way baby boomer still talk about the Nixon/Viet Nam era. To younger people, both topics are a total blank. Many know a little about the subject but it's a null issue, emotionally. DSK |

I wouldn't say that to a terrorist!!! Remember that for the first 3/4 of our national existence, over 300 years, Americans fought a bitter terrorist war with the indiginous "Indians". This is a key to our psyche. Those of us close to the traditions that 300 year war engendered have no fear of modern terrorists because they are but minor threats compared to the threat our ancestors faced. We like to think ourselves as self reliant as they were and, like them, arm ourselves and practice. We believe that one or two armed citizens on each aircraft would have prevented 9/11 - something airport security which prevented self-defense failed to do. But not all Americans share that heritage. The cultural decendents of European serfs who hid in established cities well behind the frontier still look to the lord in the castle and his knights to defend them and the very notion of having to defend themselves throws them into panic. Look at the fear in Fred Shumer's or Sarah Brady's eyes when they discuss gun ownership. These are an ever growing minority, perhaps even a majority today. Thus America's split personality. Were it not for this second group holding us back, we'd know how to deal with terrorists -- the same way our grandparents dealt with certain warlike indian tribes. And baiting them is just part of our strategy. Wild young men often attacked our isolated ranches and farms then escaped back to hide among the peaceful innocents of their tribes - just like terrorists do today. But we found a way to deal with that. We killed them all, guilty and innocent alike. I suggest that the same would work today. So the Catholic and Protestant Irish are still fighting?? So were many diverse Indian tribes. Care to buy some weapons?? evil grin When you've murdered each other ...... Regards ... |
