On alt.sailing.asa we have some Sllllooooowwww boats! These boats are
not bad boats, but they are generally pretty darn slow and need help
from their engines in certain conditions.

Joe's Steel Motorsailer:
Even though she can certainly move with a fresh breeze and carry her
heavy LWL with some speed, she's not a performer. In light air you'd
best start the motor, which Joe does often.

Jeff's PDQ 36:
Strange how the fastest boat is also the slowest. In light air the PDQ
suffers and tacking requires some hand work with the jib or even the
engines. Jeff has admitted (and well he should) that this is a weak
point on the boat and he "generally motors when speeds drop below 5
knots."

Mooron's Nordica 30:
In many ways she's the best performing slow boat here, having
reasonable sail area for her displacement. Still, she's got some heft
and more wetted surface to deal with along with a less then modern
shape.

Maxi's Sea Sprite 34:
A devastingly old underbody combined with some serious weight and a
small rig make for a boat that needs real air to be at her best. If
Maxi is carrying older sails he's really in trouble.

John's Catalina 28:
It's hard to imagine a more boring boat, especially as a newer entry
from Catalina. It's also hard to image a boat that's slower for her
age. A Hunter 28 rates as fast. People buy Catalina 28's and 30's for
space and not for the sailing experience.

Certain conditions? You mean like, trying to do 50 to 100 miles in a
day and getting secured before dark? Or making through a canal or
hole before the tide turns? Since you've never actually done these
things, you have no idea what you're talking about.

And what does it mean that I fire up an engine if we're doing under 5
knots? That says nothing about my light air performance, it really
speaks more of the performance in conditions I frequently encounter.
Since I usually do 6 to 8 knots, and sometimes average higher than
that, my planning is based on doing 7 knots. If I'm only doing 3.5,
that turns a 6 hour trip into 12 hours; not necessarily fun.

Further, it says nothing about the speed of the boat. You could have
the world's best light air sailer and still decide to power when the
speed goes below 5 knots. When I had a slower boat, my cutoff was
lower. And, of course, when I daysailed, the engine was hardly ever used.

I appreciate that you think 5 knots is an odd "cutoff" point. Since
you've chosen to live where there's no wind, you'll be lucky to see
even that speed most of the time. As a daysailor, all you ever do is
go out for an hour, then head for an hour; the actual boat speed is
irrelevant. Your boat will tip and bounce and give the illusion of
speed while you drift around and impress your friends.

And remember, your boat was singled out for having an extra 24 point
handicap in light air. So while you might think its a great light air
boat, the computer doesn't.

And for the record, if I were given your boat, the first thing I would
do is put it on the market. All of the other boats you've listed, I
would consider keeping.

Do you think urgency or purpose ever crosses RB's plate?

You mean to say that starting up the engine is a subjective based act of
volition?

Don't engines start by themselves automatically as a factor of PHRF? Isn't
it like some law of physics?

Further, it says nothing about the speed of the boat. You could have
the world's best light air sailer and still decide to power when the

Why let facts and objective measurement get in the way of lacking experience

Newer high-tech cruising laminates, actually. And she does half the wind

Let's see how many night sails you do with Thomas on board. I've done
a dozen or so night passages of over 100 miles (not counting OPB's),
most of them before GPS and Radar. We don't do them much with a child
on board.

And actually, the issue is often arriving in time to get a mooring
inside the harbor.

And since you've been more than a few miles from shore, you have no
right to comment on any aspect of cruising.

Or making through a canal or

Gee, I think my many dealings with the east river and hells gate says

Your "many dealings"? BWAHAHAHAHA! Maybe, just maybe, you can get
someone to believe you took your own boat through Hell Gate once. If
you had, you might know the correct spelling.

And besides, Hell Gate is not particularly challenging compared to
Wood's Hole. And you would wet your pants if you saw what happens at
the ends of the CC Canal if there's an opposing wind.

Is there something about the East River? I never found that any
problem at all, other than dodging the swimmers.

And what does it mean that I fire up an engine if we're doing under 5

BWAHAHAHAHA!

Sure thing, booby. Going out for a month or two away from home,
cruising Down East where there aren't too many marinas, navigating in
thick fog, being prepared to anchor out in any weather, handle any
repairs ... why should I bother? You claimed that "sailing without
A/C would be horrific" and you don't even have a genset!

I gave that some thought, but in this case I'd be afraid it would

Well, of course. If you bought ANY sailboat hoping to go fast you are an
idiot. Not a one of them can keep up with those hotels-on-a-barge called
cruise ships, let alone match their comfort.

No, sailboats are meant to be worked on - to keep you from having too much
idle time on your hands or money in your pockets that you might otherwise
spend on wenching or other sin. The proper guage of sailboat "goodness" is
how much money and time one spends working on one each season minus the time
actually spent sailing. I'm not sure where taking ones children to swim in a
sewer fits into that equation ....

He may well be a great sailor. One the best sailors I've had out on
my boat (an Olympic alternate in the Star class) almost ran my boat
aground just a mile from his normal race course. He thought my "old
man's boat" was lots of fun to sail.

Good call, Jeff. Sorry everyone isn't playing with their toys to
suit you. Then again our toys are actually entertaining to use!

No Bob, its the other way around. YOU haven't earned to right to
complain about how I, or anyone else uses their boat. Have you ever
seen me comment adversely on anyone's boat (not counting Irwins and a
certain Coronado)? I have no problem with how people use their boats,
I like most of the boats here, and respect the experience of most of
the skippers. Most of them have earned the right to comment,
occasionally harshly, on others and their boats. You have not.

You started this with your pathetic insistence that everyone approve

for your use, you need to keep making idiotic lists of reasons why
your boat vastly superior to all others, and that you got it for half

I just like keeping you on my hook. After all, you've already
admitted that everyone agrees with me.

Sorry!

You certainly are.

Well, we didn't think you meant it would be horrific in winter. But

you still don't get it. How do you actually plan to use the A/C?

If only you asked that to begin with you wouldn't look like such a punk
right now.

More lies. You never stop, do you? You just lie, and lie, and then
call be a liar. You're just a Republican, aren't you?

In my response to your "horrific" post, I said:

"BWAAHAHAHAHAHA!! A boat without A/C is horrific! I think that says
it all! And even more bizarre, he doesn't even have a genset, so it
can only be used at the slip with shorepower."

And a few days later when you said you'd get a genset, I immediately said:
"So tell us Bob, are you the type of "cruiser" that always stays at
slips, or are you the type that runs a genset all night?"

You know what we call both of these types of "cruisers" around here?
POWERBOATERS!"

You really are a pathological liar, aren't you? You don't have to
answer that, we wouldn't believe you anyways.

YOU haven't earned to right to
complain about how I, or anyone else uses their boat.

Eh, wake up, Jeff. I rarely, if ever question how people use their
boats. This has been about the boat choices themselves.

True, but you do claim they're all crap.

You and many of
the others are the ones crying over all the miles you've sailed, as if
that means ANYTHING!

To a sailor, it means a lot. To you, it means little.

....
And the best part is that when Thomas asks "what was daddy like?"
there will be a record that he can read.

Another lame duck attack using my kid.

How am I using your kid? I'm talking about you. If you were doing
something exceptionally dangerous, I might point out you now have a
child to think of. This is no different. I'm quite serious Bob. You
think you have two lives, one in the "real" world, and one on the
'net. There's some truth to that, I admit, but if I where asked what
type of person you really are, I'd have to say "just look at his
record on ASA."

Amazing and dirt low. I can see
what sort of person your are.

We all know what kind of person you are, Bob. If my daughter read
what I wrote, I could live with it. How about you?

but cruises all the same.

lame

I dunno, Jeff. We had a really good time and some awesome sex aboard.

That boat is a blast to sail and about 500 times more
fun than your boat.

and this proves what?

Well, he's sailed the 35s5 a few times. Before I bought one he said it
was twice as much as his boat which makes my boat 1000 times more fun
than your boat, give or take a few times.

You never stop, do you? You just lie,

You never really asked how we'd use the A/C. Period.

To a sailor, it means a lot.

No, Jeff. Only a louse would quantify the merits of someone's passion
by make up their set of values to judge it. And only a total ass like
yourself would react the way you have at someone who's "judged" you
boat, no matter how accurately. That's why you panties are in a twist
and that's why you're now stuck with me.

We all know what kind of person you are, Bob. If my daughter read
what I wrote, I could live with it. How about you?

Sorry, loser. That's one bit of bait I'll never touch. I don't ever
involve someone's kids in these antics on any level. It's just too low.
You're an asshole, Jeff. Plain and simple. I actually only think one
other poster here is as big as ass as you or a bigger tool.
And the bottom line is...and will always be....that I pegged your PDQ
for what it was after a single sail and it MATTERED to you. Since
you've never stepped aboard a 35s5 I have no interest in what you say.
You're last boat was a Nonsuch fer cripes sake, another boat for the
elderly.

What an asshat. Your not better than anybody. You sir made derogatory

comments about my mother when she passed away.

Your mother probably passed away from worrying if her son would ever
stop being a pathetic whiny cheap asshole. Now that she's dead there
are a lot of sick worms I'm sure. Was she cremated? No wonder air
pollution is worse. But she was an adult, faior game and I have no
reason to believe anything you say about anything. That said, I don't
target people's kids. My kid is inbred? I bet your mother would drop
dead again if she heard you talk like that.
And Sloco....your boat is a tired POS worth about a 3rd of my boat. And
that's why you've got a whole gross of Jeff's butplugs up your ass.
Yep, you're the OTHER asshole...and like Jeff it's in real life.

Only a pathetic liar like yourself always thinks others are lieing.
Two people on here know me personally and know that I don't lie about
anything on here. What would be the point. Unlike yourself I don't
feel the need to impress. Hell, I don't even think I've posted much
about myself so what pray tell would I be lieing about? As far as my
boat being worth a third of your boat .... so what. There's a lot of
boats that cost more than mine. At least my boat finishes in front of
the pack and oh yea that's the pack it started with by the way.

own way to clear a way for your fresh stupidity.
