No Beer?
Well that somewhat true, however while in Deigo Garcia in 1980 during the Iran Hostage time, we had a cargo ship tie next to us. They had a busted cargo boom, so we had to offload her across the boat deck of the gompers. luckly the ship had all the booze for the island for 3 mo. Needless to say some of the cargo was lost and damaged while transferring it. So much so we filled a 40 ft utility boat to the gunnels. It was a 3 week drunk. Every crane and boat, the Bos'n locker, the paint locker, tool room all had bars. Even so you could go on to atoll and get a 5th of Jack for 3.50..No taxes. I'll always have good memories of Deigo Garcia. Mike who is a Merchant Marine and sailor just sent me some post cards showing how developed the island is now. It was nearly pristine in the early 80's. Joe |
