I'd love to have a pet dog, however, we don't have the necessary space.
When I was a boy, we had pets but, we also had space.

Yup... our family has always had a dog... up to 4 ata atime. All big dogs...
Shepards and Dobermans. I ran a pack of 15 Beagles at the club.

Nowadays, many people who live in confined spaces have a dog. I don't
believe that one should have a dog unless one has at least 4 acres of land
for the dog to run around in. I see many people with pet dogs who do not
have the necessary space for the dog. Most of them are childless, and I
get
the impression that the pet dogs are substitutes for children.

Whoa Donal..... this ain't a Lhaso Apso what ever. My dog is a Staffordshire
Bull Terrier. I'm certain you are familiar with the breed since it
originated in Britain. Nice dog, smart and good company. I have seven
nieces/nephews that come over to hang out. I don't need a substitute for
kids. We also just got a Schipperke for the house and barn guarding duty.
It's not viable to have a large dog around elderly people.... and we have 7
acres for them to run on.

I've started wearing reading glasses -- like all my friends!! It happens
at
the age of 46.

I wouldn't know..... then again I'm only 50.

Of course not! You don't have any children.

Skewed perspective at best Donal.... I didn't ever want children.

Don't you think that sailing can be almost as good as sex?

No... unless it's sex while sailing! Mind you that mentality would restrict
one such as yourself to sailing only on Thursday evenings.

ahem...... generally you want to state a point prior to declaring it
proved.

Correct! .... and Generally you should be capable of following a discussion
before issuing a pompous correction!!

If you look back up the thread you will see that I wrote " I don't
believe that one should have a dog unless one has at least 4 acres of land
for the dog to run around in. "

Then you justified dog ownership and finished by saying "and we have 7
acres for them to run on."

I'd hate to think that you were too stupid to see that you proved my point!!

That depends on the size of the dog and the age of
the dog.

We have two big dogs on 3 acres--they hardly run
any more anyway.

Now when we had the Afghan hound we needed about
30 acres when he was young.

In this case, a wife replacement.

In that case I would recommend a Retriever for Donal....

No, Scotty! Dogs are NOT the same as sheep.
