Google as well as other search engines, are constantly changing the
algorhythyms used to rank sites. Although it is usually considered
important to have links to your site spread throughout cyberspace, it is
impossible to say with certainty just 'how' important that is at this moment
in time. This is so peeps cannot outguess the search engines and get
rankings they do not deserve.

For instance, for a while search engines would rank a site by how many times
the index page would say a key word on it. So, if SAIL was the keyword you
wanted to be ranked under, then all you would have to do is write the word
s-a-i-l in white, on top of a white background a couple of hundred times.
No one could see it when they visited your site, but the spiders would see
it when it came to visit. It would think: Geez, this site says 'sail' 200
times on the index page, so I must rank it higher than the average sailing
site that only mentions the word 'sail' 5 times.

Now, if you are caught cheating like this you run the risk of being booted
out of their results altogether.

Google got to be the top search engine by giving good, relevant RESULTS.
They set their rules in order to give their users good results. Nothing
more, nothing less. The result is all they are interested in. So, use
appropriate keywords, and describe what your site is about, especially on
the index page.

The way to rank higher in the search engines, IMHO, is not to try to go for
the obvious words such as SAIL. a quick google search of the word sail
produces over 10 million sites. What are the odds of you being on the first
page? Nil, realistically. So, how do you rank higher in searches? Go for
less used keywords. For instance, if your site is about sailing a hunter 34
in Tampa Florida, then use keywords like "Tampa sailing", "Hunter 34",
"Tampa Hunter 34 sailing", "Florida sailing", "Gulf of Mexico sailing" and
the like. When someone uses those combinations of words for their Google
search you will have a better chance of ranking higher.

as you correctly say; with a hobby site, word of mouth is indeed your best
advertisement.
I'd also suggest ensure that the meta tags in your html contain
appropriate
keywords.
Also include as many links to other relevant sites as possible. it's been
a
long while since I did any webdesign so things might well have changed
since
then, but the way google used to work when it did its bizarre monthly
"google-dance" was to rate by exterior links to your site, so trading
links
is definitely the way to go.

The only way to be effective against those who wish to disrupt this
newsgroup is to completely ignore them by filtering them out. If one does
this, no amount of "escalation" can destroy the newsgroup.

For example, my filter seems to have removed about 30 posts since the last
time I checked in here.

I'm betting that there will now be an intense flurry of derogatory posts.
Fortunately, I won't see most them, and those that I will see, I will only
see once.

The people who are attempting to disrupt the newsgroup are puerile and
unworthy of attention. The only self-imposed (or really self-appointed)
moderators are uninterested in actual conversation about sailing and related
matters. They seek to moderate away anything except chaos. It won't work.
