That's definitely true, but it's still possible. If you're upfront with the
seller... listen I'm just window shopping. They might let you go along when
they go out next. I've done that with our boats.

I know it's futile to seek consensus as to a make of boat. But, I'm
seriously considering renting for a variety of designs before buying.
Has anyone else rented a sailboat. Pros and cons? Good locations

Wow, those are some fairly steep rates. A lot cheaper to look at boats,
then convince the owner for a test sail before consideration.

John Cairns

Thanks, that's a good idea John.
I wonder, though, how long it would be before my picture with a line
through it is hanging on every dealer's bulletin board.
Scout

Hell no, the broker doesn't really sell the boat, he just shows it to you
and collects a commission. I had a brief discussion about this with the
po of my boat. Damn broker didn't show up for the closing, couldn't get
into my own boat after I'd purchased it, had to call the po for the
combination! For what they do they should be thrilled to have the
opportunity to make some money, even if it means they'll have to
something that might appear to be work.

John Cairns

Which reminds me; we just bought a house, and while we were out cruising
around and looking, we would often call the realtor whose sign was
planted in the front yard - one guy just gave us the combo to the house,
not even knowing who we were. He didn't want to come out for whatever
reason, so he just lets us into someone's home unescorted. I'd be upset
if my realtor had done that!
Scout

I think you will find that it is pretty hard to get a seller to take you
out on a test ride. You will have to show a lot of interest and most
likely put down a deposit. Even then it is going to be a very short sail
10 15 minutes. I don't think the trouble is worth it.

Nah... bare boat charters don't care how many or how few people you have.
They only care about getting their money and the boat back.

They're good boats. A good friend had one up until recently. Sold it for
more than he bought it for, but he did put in a of work on it first.

Scout
I looked at some of the rental sailboats and of course, like everyone
else I have an opinion. I would suggest the catalina 30. It has more
room inside than any 30 I have every been on. Also if you like it and
decide to buy there are some incredible deals available.

As I get older I'm beginning to appreciate the philosophy that everything is
life is borrowed, rented, and essentially, not really mine. So it might just
be a question of which is less expensive, to rent and leave all the work to
others, or buy and have the short term satisfaction of being the lord of a
tiny domain.

I'm sure you'll take your laptop into the grave with you and post from the

Oh wait, that's not it; you just don't get it.

You poor people need to hold that point of view or you'd lose all
hope.

Changing your tune, eh? YOU re the one who says you believe
everything in life is borrowed. (Well, moron that you are, you
actually typed "everything is life is", but I'm pretty sure you meant
'in' instead of 'is')

Even with your attempt to change the meaning, you're still holding on
to hopes that'll never come true for you.

You missed the boat once again. No matter, I was in fact referring to the
fact that nothing is permanent in life. It doesn't surprise me that you
can't grasp the concept. I feel confident that the intelligent readers will
understand my meaning.
And thanks for correcting my typo; I also saw it but figured most people are
smart enough to correct as needed.

You could always find somebody who wants to share...problematical if you
don't get along, but worthwhile if you balance each other out on costs and
usage, etc.

Renting would be a very expensive way to choose a boat, unless you have
already narrowed your choice down to two or three.

If you have narrowed your choice, then you shouldn't really need to test
sail all of them - because their performance will all be similiar. At that
point, the important thing will be the layout of the boat - which you can
judge as soon as you step aboard. It's a bit like buying a house - you have
some basic requirements (no. of bedrooms, garden, parking, etc), but after
that you know the right house as soon as you walk into it.

It sounds to me like you don't have enough experience of different boats to
know what you want. If that is the case, then I think that you should join
a sailing club where members offer crewing positions to non-boat owning
members. Do such clubs exist where you live?

I crewed on many different boats(24ft Westerly Centaur, First 42, Etap 29 &
34, Moody 34) before I was ready to buy. The crewing experience taught me
about my sailing preferences. I wanted as much performance as I could get
in a family cruiser. When I came to choose my boat I only had about three
boats to choose from. In the end, I only needed to test sail one boat.

Regards

Donal
